JPGAMES.DE: JenovanoDanna’s Games of the Year 2020

The year 2020 is drawing to a close and the JPGames.de team wants to present its games of the year for the sixth time this year. Every day until December 31st, some team members will present three favorites of 2020 as well as the most anticipated titles of the next year – today it is JenovanoDanna’s turn.

JenovanoDannas Games of the Year

3rd place: Hades

Admittedly, I found it more difficult to find third place for myself. I had too much to do for Ghost of Tsushima at the time and haven’t been in the mood to continue playing since then. Cyberpunk 2077, on the other hand, has been out for too short a time and I also played the PS4 version before switching to PC, which pissed me off the experience (even if there is potential). 13 Sentinels grabbed me for a few days, but quickly let go. I really enjoyed something like the latest Paper Mario, but I wouldn’t put the title in a top 3. However, Hades was ideal for this, as I’ve been keeping an eye on the developers Supergiant Games since Pyre, as I just love their character design.

Unfortunately, I haven’t got beyond Hades with Hades, but I’ve had a few hours of fun. The gameplay is addicting, the characters are, as always, well done (and superbly set to music!) And I just like the whole atmosphere. If I need a little break from the bigger titles like Cyberpunk 2077 over the holidays, then I definitely want to try and spank the lord of the underworld!

Place 2: The Last of Us Part II

With The Last of Us this placement wasn’t clear from the start – for a long time I wasn’t interested in the game and didn’t want to play it. I had never played the first part, but the controversy about the title reached me too, which is why I wanted to see what it was all about. So shortly after FFVIIR I made up the remaster of the first part before I went straight to the second part and wow! I am at least grateful to the controversy on the Internet for piquing my interest and letting me experience these wonderful games.

The Last of Us actually tasted my blood when it came to stealth gameplay, and it definitely got me more vigilant. Among other things, in Cyberpunk 2077 I just decided on the sneaky path, because I really enjoy sneaking in games. On the other hand, I really loved the story of the second part – I definitely found such a bloodthirsty, brutally drawn revenge story to be something different and incredibly exciting. In my opinion, Naughty Dog knew how to handle it really well here, even if it didn’t suit everyone. Still, I think it’s great that they carried out their vision and I’m glad to have seen these games this year.

1st place: Final Fantasy VII Remake

When I saw the first few minutes of this game, I knew that this would be my game of the year. Admittedly, I’m also a fan of Final Fantasy VII and immediately felt at home in Midgar. After initial doubts, I enjoyed the combat system and loved to slice my way through the known opponents with Cloud and Co. The development of the areas and the addition of new side quests complemented the game in a meaningful way for me and gave me the opportunity to spend even more time in a world that I already loved. Also, I’m totally in favor of releasing old game soundtracks.

Since it ended a few months ago, I find the criticism of the history of the game not really justified, as it is today. If you want to experience Final Fantasy VII like in the past, you can do so on several consoles or on the PC. I love the new direction that has been taken because I am looking forward to the following parts and can assume that I no longer anticipate every detail. Therefore: Thank you, FFVIIR. It’s been a long time since I had as much fun playing a game as I was looking forward to the following parts.

Most Wanted 2021

Okay – here I want to try to be reasonably realistic. I’m not expecting anything in the direction of Final Fantasy for the next year, but I’m keeping my eyes peeled for Square Enix. Most of all, however, my attention goes to Nintendo as I didn’t have any of them in my top 3 this year and I definitely want to see it differently next year. Last year Fire Emblem: Three Houses was able to convince me all along its length and I still had fun with it this year. For many, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a quarantine savior, but those days are over since Wild World, as I realized. I would like to see something in the direction of Zelda, be it news about Breath of the Wild 2 or something about the upcoming anniversary. The Nintendo fan girl that I am would also accept a 3D collection like Mario. Since the banjo announcement for Super Smash Bros., however, I also have the silent hope in my heart that something is happening in this direction – the world and I would certainly be ready at any time for a new edition of the old 3D platformer.

The entire JPGames team wishes you a Happy New Year 2021!
