Karstadt-Kaufhof: No hope for further rescues

Almost a month ago it became known that Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof closes 80 locations in Germany. That is more than a third of all corporate branches in Germany. Up to 6,000 full-time positions should be eliminated through this step and further savings measures. The company employs a total of 28,000 people in Germany. Then some locations breathed a sigh of relief because the company removed twelve of the branches from the strike list.

Now the company management wrote to the mayors of municipalities, who had fought until the end for the preservation of their Galeria-Karstadt-Kaufhof branches, that there was no hope anymore, as reported by the trade journal “Textile Industry”.

The retail giant was in a deep crisis due to the corona pandemic and the associated store closures. The general representative Arndt Geiwitz is quoted in the “world” as “no longer an economic continuation perspective” at the branches concerned.

Originally feared more branch closures

Overall, the number of store closures is nevertheless lower than initially feared. The management had previously indicated that up to 80 of the 172 branches could be closed. However, in addition to the Karstadt Kaufhof branches, 20 Karstadt Sport branches and 100 of the 130 travel agencies will be closed.

As the “Handelsblatt” reported, most closings are in the state of Berlin. Six locations, including four Karstadt and two Kaufhof branches, will be closed here. In addition, there is the branch in Berlin-Tegel – it has not even experienced its opening day.
