“I’ve found it makes a big difference that two women speak the same love language,” she says. The 45-year-old actress has previously shot intimate scenes with a woman. “In the first movie I ever did, Heavenly Creatures, I also played a lesbian girl, ”she says.
During this film, which came out in 1994 and was nominated for an Oscar, she felt inexperienced and not so confident. “I was just seventeen and had hardly any experiences of real intimacy in my own life, I had no idea what I was doing other than playing a character,” says Winslet.
Ammonite is set in England in the mid-1800s and is loosely based on the life of the famous English paleontologist Mary Anning, played by Kate Winslet. She is tasked with taking care of a rich woman named Charlotte Murchison, played by Soairse Ronan. She takes her on a quest for fossils on the coast, among other things. The two develop an intense love affair.
The director of the movie, Francis Lee, previously announced that she deliberately chose a love story between two women. Lee, known for God’s Own Country, wanted to contribute to more homosexual love stories on the silver screen with Ammonite. “These are still the less told stories. And it feels important to tell them. ”
