Olympic marathon champion and world record holder Eliud Kipchoge is one of the stars in a new project in the athletics world: the virtual team marathon. The event will be held worldwide on June 6 and 7, with the message: “Walk alone, but in a team” (“Runasone”).
The organizing NN Running Team, with Jos Hermens as director, has in collaboration with two partners (NN Group and Maurten) devised a virtual team relay where people worldwide can form a team of four to cover the marathon distance together. Each team member runs solo 10.5 kilometers in their own environment, after which the team performance on a total marathon is listed in a digital ranking.
The participants have a chance to be one of the ten teams in which a top athlete of the NN Running Team will be included. In addition to Kipchoge, the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele, the Dutch record holder Abdi Nageeye and the Belgian record holder Bashir Abdi are also among the parties.
“All over the world, runners miss the races, the goal for all training sessions, running together in a big city marathon. That connection between runners of all levels around the world tries to capture the NN Running Team in this virtual race,” the organizers said. know.
Kipchoge is looking forward to the new adventure. “Marathon is a sport in which top athletes and recreationists all race in the same race. It is what makes our sport unique and I like the essence of this. Each runner has his own pace, his own background and his own motives why he runs. It it doesn’t matter if you walk in front or behind. We are a worldwide family. “
