It’s a small gesture, but a gesture that counts. The Luxembourg government is going to send 58 respirators to New Delhi in dire need of healthcare equipment to deal with a terrible wave of covid contamination.

Clearly, the covid epidemic has gotten out of hand in India. In just seven days, the virus was tested among 2.5 million inhabitants. It is now at the rate of 821,000 new infections that the country lives, whose hospitals and the health system can no longer meet expectations. A situation so worrying that international aid is beginning to flow.

Already, a US military plane, carrying more than 400 oxygen cylinders, hospital equipment and a million coronavirus tests, has landed in New Delhi on Friday. And among the 40 or so countries that have pledged to send life-saving medical aid and supplies, there is now Luxembourg.

Thus, the Grand Duchy confirmed, on Friday, the dispatch of 58 respirators “to respond to the emergency situation and strengthen the hospital infrastructure to treat the sick”. This support is part of the European Union civil protection mechanism which was requested on April 24 by the Indian government.

It is more particularly a question of helping New Delhi which is facing in particular an acute shortage of oxygen, antiviral drugs as well as hospital equipment.
