Are you looking for the latest smartphone updates? You might find what you are looking for in this message. Because there are some updates for well-known mobile phones. Not only with Apple, Samsung and Huawei, but also with Honor, Nokia, Realme and OnePlus.
Apple: iOS 13.5 and iOS 12.4.7
We’ll start with Apple today. Because you have already noticed: iOS 13.5 is now available for current iPhones. And as we have already reported to you in our corresponding message, this will improve, among other things, unlocking the Apple smartphone via face recognition (Face ID). Specifically, unlocking is now easier when you wear a face mask.
But the truth is that there are reports that iOS 13.5 on some iPhones means that individual apps no longer work as usual; sometimes even no longer start. YouTube and TikTok are reported to be affected. In the past few days, app developers have already responded with corresponding updates for their small smartphone programs to ensure that they can continue to run without restrictions.
If you are using an older iPhone, on which the current iOS 13 cannot run, you can also install an update: iOS 12.4.7. It is available for the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, among others. However, you cannot discover new functions with it. Because Apple only closes security holes with iOS 12.4.7.
Samsung has communicated a whole armada of new updates in the past few days. Especially with a view to the Google May patch, some Samsung smartphones make it to the current patch level. The Galaxy Note 10 Lite, the Galaxy Note 8, the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy A30 and the Galaxy S10 Lite should be mentioned in this context.
For the Galaxy S20, the Galaxy S20 Plus and the Galaxy S20 Ultra, a new, further update for the camera is announced. Samsung itself does not comment on the exact changes, but loudly SamMobile Among other things, an improvement in recordings in night mode is to be expected.
With a view to current smartphone models, the manufacturer Huawei, which was badly hit by the trade dispute between the USA and China, is similarly busy. So you can already now or shortly make an update to the April patch from Google on the Huawei Mate 20 series. The same applies to the Huawei P smart 2019 and the Huawei Mate 30 and the Mate 30 Pro. The first update waves for the Huawei Mate 20 RS, in which the May patch is an integral part, are already rolling in Asia.
And also Honor, discount brand from the Huawei group, has to report some updates. Many of these have already started in Asia these days and will soon be available in Europe and thus also in Germany. For example, the Honor Play, the Honor 10 Lite and the Honor View 20 were raised to the May patch level by Google.
For the Honor 8A, available since early 2019, an update to the April patch is now available. And for the fairly new Honor 9X, a more extensive system update including an April patch is in the starting blocks. Among other things, the camera software is experiencing improvements here, reports HuaweiCentral.
Xiaomi has also announced an extensive update for its European smartphone variants. Many cell phones are said to receive an update to MIUI 12. The Mi 9, the Mi 9T, the Mi 9T Pro, the Redmi K20 and the Redmi K20 Pro are among the first smartphones to receive an update to MIUI 12 in a few weeks.
Other Xiaomi smartphones popular in Germany – for example the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the Redmi Note 9S, the Redmi Note 8T and the Mi Note 10 Lite – are gradually getting the MIUI-12 update. However, Xiaomi does not provide any precise details about the schedule here. So it can still take months. A complete list of those smartphones that receive a corresponding update to MIUI 12 can be viewed on a website specially set up for this purpose.
In addition to some improvements in terms of data protection, Xiaomi is focusing on a new design including dark mode, among other things. Xiaomi also sets a new standard for multitasking with floating windows in full-screen mode. A switch between apps should then no longer be necessary, the Chinese manufacturer promises. Also part of MIUI 12 is an ultra-energy-saving mode that limits the functions with the highest power consumption in order to extend the standby time of the phone when the battery is low.
HMD Global / Nokia
Happy customer also from HMD Global. The licensee of the Nokia brand on the smartphone market has announced that it will now also be supplying the Nokia 5.1 Plus with Android 10. What is generally good news is initially not for users in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Because they cannot install the upgrade yet. Only in a second or third wave in the coming weeks will they also benefit from the new software. The situation is different for users in Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg or the Netherlands, for example. The update to Android 10 for the Nokia 5.1 Plus is already available there.

There is also good news from Realme. The comparatively young smartphone brand has provided an update for the Realme 6 Pro, among other things. In addition to Google’s May Android patch, various minor bugs have been fixed. The same applies to the Realme X2 and the Realme 5. The Realme 6 was also raised to the May patch level by Google. In addition, Realme eliminates a bug in this phone that could lead to a green display and possibly even an automatic restart of the device.
A comprehensive update is now also available for the Oppo Find X2 Pro. In addition to the May patch from Google, Oppo has also screwed on the camera software. There is also a minor update for the Oppo A91, which fixes a minor bug with incoming and outgoing calls in addition to Google’s May patch.
OnePlus 8 Pro downgrade
Meanwhile, users of the OnePlus 8 Pro have to prepare for a temporary downgrade. After it has become public that “X-rays” are possible with the smartphone’s camera under certain circumstances, OnePlus now wants to deactivate this function again. With the next update for the OnePlus 8 Pro, the X-Ray camera filter will probably disappear for the time being; but come back later in a revised form.
General information about smartphone updates
Finally, two general tips. First, all the updates mentioned here are not available on all devices at the same time. Instead, they are delivered step by step in waves, as you can see, for example, in the update for the above-mentioned Nokia smartphone.
Also important: You will usually receive a notification on your smartphone display as soon as an update is available. But it may also be the case that you can already install an update, although you have not yet received any information. Simply check manually in the settings of your Android smartphone whether there is new firmware available.
