Maserati GranTurismo (2022): For the first time also as an electric version

A little excursion into history: The year is 1947 and Maserati is showing its car at the Geneva Motor Show A6 1500GT. A design revolution and at the same time the first maserati for the street. 75 years later, the Italians show us the latest generation of theirs GT and it’s another revolution for the brand. The trident becomes electric.

Because the new dream coupé from Turin does not only come with the new one Nettuno V6 from the MC20 to the customers, but also in the Folgore version, which in Italian means something like lightning or just lightning.

Visually, the GT has evolved only slightly

Anyone who sees the new GT for the first time will probably neither be struck by thunder nor be struck by lightning. Connoisseurs can see that this is a completely new car, but at first glance the Italians have only cautiously developed the sports coupé. The predecessor was on the market for 15 years, was quite popular and that’s exactly why the new one wants to rejuvenate the shape, but not completely change it.

Maserati Gran Turismo

As is typical for Maserati, the three air outlets are located behind the front wheels, while the well-known coupé shape is retained.

A look at the standard LED lights reveals: The new one too GranTurismo is immediately included in “La Famiglia” by Maserati. The lineage to the new MC 20 is clearly recognizable. The same eyes! The typical proportions: long hood, short overhangs and the gently sloping roof line remain. Just like the shark grille and the three distinctive air outlets behind the front wheels.

Dimensions at a glance

• Length: 4.97 meters
• Width: 2.11 meters
• Height: 1.35 meters
• Wheelbase: 2.93 metres
• Trunk volume: 310 liters (petrol); 270 liters (electric version)

A V6 in two power levels and a purely electric version

Three different versions slumber under the ever-long bonnet. Modena, Trophy and Folgore. The latter relies on three electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear axle. All three deliver 300kW and bring it together to 761 hp system output and 1350 Newton meters of maximum torque.

The rear end is also reminiscent of its predecessor. Of course, the electric GT will not have four tailpipes.

With the boost function, there are even 829 at times hp inside. One can only imagine what happens if you make your right foot long and narrow here. Expressed in numbers, it takes 2.7 seconds from 0-100 km/h and the speed limit of 200 km/h on Germany’s autobahns, recently proposed by the Naumburg public prosecutor’s office, is reached after just 8.8 seconds.

Maserati GT manages up to 320 km/h

And yes! Even if Maserati does not specify a time to 300 km/h, it goes even further. At least 320 km/h are on the data sheet. It is questionable, however, how far this will go. Basically, Maserati specifies the range as 450 kilometers according to WLTP. The battery has a usable capacity of 83 kWh and, thanks to 800 volt technology, manages to charge at best with 270 kW.

Means: Every 5 minutes you have 100 kilometers more in the battery. The hour of the combustion engine still strikes here. Because the 70 liter tank is easily filled up again during this time and that is supposedly enough for a range of 650 kilometers. However, not with a species-appropriate driving style.

The technical data at a glance:

Max. boost: 610 kW (829 hp)

The engine is already known from the new MC 20, at least as a basis. It is a 3.0 liter V6 twin turbo engine with the addition Nettuno. The GT comes in the Modena version with 490 hp and 600 Nm and in the Trofeo variant with 550 hp and 650 Nm. Both are coupled to the well-known 8-speed automatic transmission from ZF, which is also used in the Grecale SUV, for example.

Always all-wheel drive in the new GT

maserati deliberately decided against the dual-clutch transmission from the MC 20 because the GranTurismo name is less focused on the race track and should also be more suitable for everyday use and comfortable than its predecessor. For example, it always comes with all-wheel drive.

The cockpit is still covered, but there will probably be three screens: one behind the steering wheel, a touch display in the middle and one for climate control.

Nevertheless, he has to Maserati GT of course hide it from sporting activities. Sprint values to 200 km/h of 13.0 and 11.4 seconds and a top speed of 302 or even 320 km/h are enough for more than just the quartet game. The most important thing: Even if the last acceptance is still missing, we can already reveal it. Despite six cylinders, the sound still sounds like Maserati.

Space for four people in the Maserati GT

The interior is still covered, but a look into the cockpit of the MC 20 at least gives an idea of what customers can expect from the GT. The cockpit is dominated by three screens, one behind the steering wheel, a touch screen in the middle and one for controlling the air conditioning.

There is also an optional head-up display, a smartwatch instead of the analog second knife in the middle and a wireless connection to the smartphone. Thanks to “Over the Air Updates”, the system should always be up to date.

Maserati Gran Turismo

A bit cramped, but passengers can also ride in row two. For a better sense of space, the rear window extends far into the roof.

Finally, let’s take a look at row two. The Italians have given the passengers 4.6 centimeters more legroom and a rear window that extends far into the roof for more brightness. Even the trunk can be used on vacation with 310 liters for the combustion engine and 270 liters for the electric drive plus ski hatch.

Anyone who has been struck by lightning in the face of these pictures can already order now. Maserati is not yet revealing prices, but it can be assumed that the petrol engine will not start below 150,000 euros and the E variant will only start above 200,000. The first deliveries are scheduled for January 2023.
