Verstappen recorded a time of 1.17.835 on the softest tire. He was thus more than two tenths faster than Lewis Hamilton. His teammate Valtteri Bottas was only fifth fastest. Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were faster than the Finn.
Sergio Pérez, Verstappen’s teammate at Red Bull Racing, again lagged behind and did not get further than tenth place in the final practice. Verstappen has now been the fastest in the third and final practice session for eight race weekends in a row.
The Dutchman was particularly fast in the second sector on the Circuit de Catalunya. In his fastest lap, Hamilton was the best through the last sector. Alfa Romeo driver Kimi Räikkönen was remarkably the fastest in sector one and eventually set ninth fastest.
Qualifying for the Grand Prix of Spain starts on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. It promises another exciting battle for pole position between Red Bull and Mercedes.
