Maz Kanata, the literally ancient space pirate, looks in the movies of Star Wars pretty cute. But that would have been almost different. In the first draft for the character she looked a lot different, and a lot more frightening.
When creating the different characters of Star Wars comes a lot of work. Especially with characters that are made entirely by computer. There is the ancient space pirate Maz Kanata, which is voiced by actress Lupita Nyong’o. She originally had a completely different look.
We got to know Maz Kanata in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. Her most recognizable feature is probably the aviator goggles she wears. But an unprecedented sketch of the character now shows that she actually did not have those glasses.
Instead of glasses, Maz Kanata would have had eyes that resemble pilot’s glasses. And yes, that looks as terrifying as it sounds. Christian Alzmann, Concept Artist and Art Director at Lucasfilm, shares the photos of Maz Kanata’s first design on Instagram. “I wanted to create the feeling of thick, heavy glasses without using them in the design,” it sounds. We are happy that in the end we opted for a design with real glasses.

Maz Kanata appeared in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, Star Wars Episode VIII; The Last Jedi and Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. We are currently working on the next trilogy. It will be written and directed by Rian Johnson and separate from the Skywalker Saga.
Whether we will see Maz Kanata appear in that trilogy is doubtful. Although she has been around for a long time, of course, she can appear in any era.
