Meatless Farm expands significantly in Europe | Financial

The company is currently in talks with several supermarkets, including Albert Heijn, Jumbo, Lidl, Aldi and Superunie to ensure that the vegan burgers, ground beef and bratwurst are on the shelves this summer. Since the beginning of this year, the products have been available through online supermarket Crisp and through shopping service Gorillas in Amsterdam.

Meatless Farm has since moved its headquarters to the capital. Under the leadership of director Erwin Meijer, who previously worked for 25 years at discounter Lidl, the company must experience strategic growth in Europe and the rest of the world in the coming years. “We not only want to conquer the Dutch market, but also become a global player. We are already active in the United Kingdom (UK) and also in Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. ”

In the UK, products are already at the four major supermarkets Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Asda. Several months ago, Meatless Farm raised $ 31 million for further growth of the business.

Meatless Farm was founded in 2016 by Danish businessman Morten Toft Bech. The producer of vegetable meat substitutes uses soy as little as possible and has set up its own factory in Canada where the raw materials are produced. “It mainly concerns peas and we plant them ourselves”, says Meijer.

Meatless Farm has also profited significantly from the corona crisis. Sales grew by 200% last year. “And for this year we expect worldwide sales growth of 400 percent. We see that consumers are increasingly thinking about health and sustainability. There is a lot of demand from large food service parties in Europe. But we also see it reflected in its popularity in, for example, England and Spain. Traditionally, these are not countries with a preference for vegan. “

According to Meijer, the intention is to deliver to restaurants as quickly as possible. Meatless Farm is already active on and has already established contacts with 300 restaurants.

“And in the US also with a large hot dog chain. We hope to be active in the Netherlands via several channels after the summer. ”
