Mercedes A 220 d in endurance test: 6.3 liters consumption
An assessment that hardly anyone contradicted in the following two and a half years. With impressive nonchalance, the two-liter shook its 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque from the four cylinders, brought the smallest star to 100 km/h in around seven seconds and ran with particular preference beyond the 200 km/h mark on the autobahns of this republic. Truly impressive.

On the few leisurely pleasure trips in between, there was also a five in front of the decimal point, and a range of over 1000 kilometers could be achieved without any problems. The cockroach was also not wasteful when it came to AdBlue requirements. With a little more than one liter every 1000 kilometers, the generously dimensioned urea tank (23.8 l) ensured predictable stops.
Travel and comfort: one with an asterisk
In any case, the compact was fully suitable for long journeys. As Joachim State put it, the “beautiful workmanship with a dash of glimmer glamor and the attentive LED light” supported this. Yes, many people were only too happy to get used to this Benz. “What a wonderful car – small, handy, clear,” enthused colleague Conny Poltersdorf and praised the Swabian not only as a travel professional, but also as a sporty city runabout.

However, a certain level problem of the Benz was noticed, especially in the urban environment. Because the A-Class inherently has little ground clearance and its nose sniffs quite low over the asphalt, steep underground car park driveways or particularly serious speed bumps have caused it to come into contact with the ground. So after the first ugly bounce at the latest, we were very careful. However, this does not change the fact that you descend very deeply into the A class – no fun for tall guys with backs.
Some overly cautious assistants
And sometimes a fundamental problem, as Conny Poltersdorf had to find out: “With very high curbs, passengers sometimes have difficulty opening the door – I’ve never experienced that before.” The MBUX infotainment, on the other hand, received a lot of praise. Understandable language assistance, sharp displays, well-oriented navigation – you could rely on the multimedia services of the A-Class. Yes, the fact that Apple CarPlay was still connected to the cable and the touchpad repeatedly provoked incorrect operation was annoying, but we could get over it.

Some colleagues reacted less relaxed to the sometimes overcautious assistants. Old markings in construction sites or pedestrians in the curve area (but on the sidewalk!) sometimes prompted the security forces to intervene – that’s better. When the 100,000 kilometers were full, there was still only one wish: Can’t he stay? But the editorial request did not help, and S-AK 4212 was also dismantled into its individual parts by AUTO BILD and DEKRA.
Wear and tear? Nothing dramatic!
