Mercedes-AMG EQE: the new electric AMGs under test

Starting signal for the probably first electric racing taxis in the history of Mercedes-Benz. The new top model EQE 53 4Matic+ delivers up to 687 hp and accelerates to country road speed in 3.3 seconds. Mercedes’ all-electric alternative to the most popular taxi model in Germany will also be the second and third e-car from the performance brand from Affalterbach and clearly shows: AMG’s future is also electric. Unlike the EQS, the EQE 43 4Matic will also be a smaller AMG version of the EQE.

Design: few differences to the normal EQE

As with the EQS, Mercedes leans out the window with clear, flowing shapes and breaks new ground. Of course, this also applies to the sports models from AMG. Compared to the normal EQE, almost nothing changes visually compared to the top models, only the struts in the front and the spoiler lip at the rear reveal the power under the metal. On the wheel side, the two sports models have 20-inch rims as standard, with 21-inch wheels with mixed tires available as an option.

If you want carbon-ceramic brakes on the front axle, you have to choose the 21-inch rims.

Interior: new decors and displays for the AMGs

Inside, in addition to specific displays, there is a new AMG steering wheel and sports seats with AMG logos. Otherwise, the Affalterbachers use the AMG line. However, special decors such as carbon still set the sports models apart from the series. The new AMG steering wheel comes standard with display buttons that can be used to change the driving modes or the car’s soundscape. The MBUX hyperscreen, which is 1.41 meters wide and houses three displays, is also available as an option for the AMGs.

Technology and engines: up to 687 hp with the dynamic package

But the important changes are under the sheet metal of the EQE. The chassis comes entirely from AMG and includes special links and stiffer anti-roll bars. With the sporty three-chamber air spring, the developers basically use the AMG GT 4-door. In addition to an adapted winding and an extended shaft shaft, the electric motors of the 53er are now also designed for more torque and higher speeds after the AMG treatment.

Both models are almost identical in appearance, but the technology of the 53 has been modified more.

The result: with the AMG Dynamic package, the top EQE delivers up to 687 hp and 1000 Nm. If you don’t need that much power, you can use the EQE 43. Up to 476 hp and 860 Nm are available here, even without overhauled engines. Fans of engine sound will have the opportunity to show the environment how much is going on under the sheet metal through loudspeakers in the bumper.

Batteries: large EQE batteries for the top models

The batteries in both models have a maximum capacity of 90.6 kWh. The power storage units have been optimized for the higher driving currents and recalibrated to meet AMG requirements. The energy output in the sporty driving modes is trimmed for performance and in comfort mode for a maximum range.

Behind the bumper there are speakers that produce an “engine sound”.

Driving: This is how the electric AMG drives with 687 hp

On the first trip we are on the road with the 53 4Matic+. With the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package, it delivers a brutal 687 hp and 1000 Nm to all four wheels. Normal are 626 hp and 950 Nm. This shoots the dignified sedan in 3.3 seconds to 100 km / h and runs a little later at Tempo 240 in the limiter. The sound generator always gives good feedback about the load condition.

The optimized AMG Ride Control+ air suspension and the rear-axle steering are designed to ensure that the power can be mastered ideally. In order to achieve the maximum range of up to 526 kilometers (EQE 43: 534 km), on the other hand, the comfort mode, maximum recuperation and a light power base are recommended.

Prices: Nothing goes below 100,000 euros

Driving an AMG is no bargain. While the basic model EQE 300 is in the price list from 63,427 euros, the EQE 43 4Matic costs at least 103,828 euros and thus almost exactly 40,000 euros more. The EQE 53 4Matic+ is even more expensive, for which customers have to pay 109,778 euros. Both AMG variants, EQE 43 and EQE 53, can be configured and ordered online since summer 2022. The exact delivery date depends on the options chosen.
