Mercedes EQS: test, electric, range, battery, MBUX, price

Sometimes the good things actually take a little more time. Or a lot more time. In 1921 Edmund Rumpler presented his aerodynamically optimized teardrop car. Of the CW value was just 0.28. For Mercedes At the time, this was reason enough to develop the Benz teardrop car under license and for racing. A century later, the Swabians have their own Aerodynamic miracle: Of the EQS is much more than one fully electric relative of the S-Class, be drag coefficient of 0.20 is actually World record in the series cars.
A lot of consistency in the development can already be seen on the outside. Instead of the large grill, the front adorns closed black panel with a continuous strip of lights arranged above. The side silhouette is from “One Bow” design (an arc) dominates. The strict form offers many advantages. Through the perfected wind slippage energy consumption decreases that Range increases. In addition, the classic hatchback combines the best use of space with high variability. The trunk of the EQS 610 swallows up to 1770 liters. For comparison: an E-Class station wagon is hardly larger with up to 1820 liters. With a length of 5.22 meters, the EQS can be classified between the short and long version of the S-Class, but is on its own electrical platform. This eliminates the bulky center tunnel.
Big cinema: the EQS display is 1.41 meters wide. The latest version of the MBUX system makes operation very easy.
The MBUX fits a luxury electric liner
The fact that the seating comfort in the back is not completely convincing despite the princely legroom is due to the Batteries in the vehicle floorthat ensure that your legs are sharply bent. Up front it travels at the highest level. Finest leather on very comfortable seating with a wide adjustment range, that’s how we imagine the luxury class. The huge one that extends from A-pillar to A-pillar is particularly striking MBUX hyperscreen. The 1.41-meter element made of glass houses three monitors. The driver can see all the necessary driving data on one right behind the steering wheel 12.3 inch screen. The 17.7-inch screen in the middle provides all navigation, setting and entertainment information, while the passenger can look forward to his own 12.3-inch screen. Just him, by the way. If a film is currently running and the driver peers over, this is immediately noticed by a camera and the screen is dimmed accordingly.
Mercedes also has other things with his latest MBUX version again vigorously refilled. “Zero Layer” is intended to ensure that all functions can be accessed directly from the top level. “Magic Modules” remembers the user behavior and arranges the frequently used menu items accordingly. That works in everyday life pleasantly intuitive. Especially since the voice control is good at using natural language. If you still want the old MBUX version, just press the home button once and everything will look like it used to.
Quite neat: With a measured consumption of 26.9 kWh / 100 km, the EQS can travel around 400 kilometers.
The range of the EQS should be 672 km
The classic way is also started with a button. In the current Top model EQS 580 4Matic there is an electric motor each on the front and rear axles, the system output is 523 hp, the maximum torque 855 Nm. It whips brutally, seamlessly and without interruption 2.6 ton ship if necessary in 4.2 seconds to 100 km / h, 200 are reached after 15.5 seconds, shortly afterwards it runs directly into the limiter at 210 km / h. The combination of the top drag coefficient and the huge one 107.8 kWh battery should enable up to 672 kilometers at a time. Thanks to fast charging with up to 200 kW are back 300 kilometers after 15 minutes. In this way, the e-car loses its horror even for frequent drivers. On our test round, the EQS 580 had a consumption of 26.9 kWh / 100 km, which is about 400 kilometers range. Not bad for such a luxury steamer.
That goes into the money: Mercedes charges at least 135,529 euros for an EQS 580 4Matic. Our test car cost 150,631 euros.
When it comes to the price, Mercedes is right
Another advantage of good aerodynamics are the very low wind noise. In connection with the quiet rolling and – apart from the minimal whistling – the lack of engine noise is what the EQS is like one of the quietest cars on the market. the attentive air suspension works almost perfectly. Only when driving very slowly do small bumps make it into the interior, only to starve to death in the thickly padded seat. the steering works with the brand typical Calm and precision. Just that Brake feel suffers from the enormous Recuperation (up to 290 kW) and requires some getting used to.
Otherwise, the EQS is as elegant as an attentive butler and pampers discreetly. In electric sports cars you may miss the spirit of a combustion engine, In the luxury class, the electric motor is perfect. You don’t want to get out there anymore. Until you hear the price: 135,529 euros plus extras. A fortune. But such a drop car 100 years ago was probably not a bargain either.
