Mercedes EQXX (2022): Fully electric 1000 km without charging stop

Mercedes is silvering the fully electric future for us. The Swabians show at the CES in Las Vegas their brand new Vision EQXX study and in contrast to most concept studies, it can actually drive. More than 1000 kilometers, to be precise, fully electric and without an additional charging stop. Here design meets aerodynamics, lightweight construction meets innovative production and show car meets prototype. The development time? Just 18 months! That already makes the EQXX the most exciting study of the year!

Appearance: The EQXX gives an outlook on upcoming EQ models

The Vision EQXX has a lot to offer in terms of appearance alone aerodynamic shape lets the car stand elegantly on the wheels and gives it a certain lightness. Most of them closed front wears headlights that are of course reminiscent of the EQ family and give a glimpse of the upcoming light graphics at Mercedes. The small air inlet is usually closed and only opened when necessary. On the side, aerodynamically optimized rims and special tires, which are supposed to reduce air turbulence to a minimum, stand out.

The rear is reminiscent of the IAA study from 2015. With the EQXX, however, the end is much more elegant. The active diffuser ensures the right pressure conditions.

The retractable door handles are standard parts from the EQS, S-Class and SL. the The mirror housing and glass are one component, which is reminiscent of Polestar and also helps aerodynamics. At the rear, the EQXX not only converges visually, the track is also narrower than at the front. At the rear, an extendable diffuser ensures the right pressure conditions and the smoothest possible flow. The rear is reminiscent of the Concept IAA from 2015, but looks much more practical here.

Aerodynamics: The design came after the function of the Mercedes

The design department was only allowed to approach the car in the second instance. First it was the turn of the aerodynamicists. They defined many areas of the vehicle even before the EQXX was optically developed. In addition to the body were therefore also own rims and even special tires designed, everything in the service of the quietest possible air flow.

The EQXX is trimmed for maximum aerodynamics. This is also shown by the air duct at the front.

Out came a cwValue of just 0.17. Such values were already achieved at Mercedes in 1978 with the C111 III test vehicle (0.18). The big difference: The EQXX is roadworthy and does not have any wheel arches with a fairing. Even one Chassis number is already wearing the study in order to later prove its ability under real conditions with a regular license plate.

Drive and battery: more than 1000 km electric range in the EQXX

The EQXX is anything but a pure show car. Mercedes would like with the study Drive over 1000 km on one battery charge and the at recommended speed on German autobahns. This should be made possible by a mix of the aforementioned particularly streamlined body and a very efficient drive. Assistance in customizing the up to 150 kW (204 PS) electric motor In the rear, the developers got it from the in-house Formula 1 and Formula E racing teams. She should be one 95 percent efficiency own. Also the Operating voltage of the system lies with more than 900 volts unusually high. The battery pack is only half the size of an EQS, 30 percent lighter and has almost the same capacity at around 100 kWh.

The EQXX should cover more than 1000 km with one battery charge.

Mercedes has teamed up with its cell supplier CATL and the Increased silicon content in the battery cells. Coupled with other adaptations, this could make the The energy density of the batteries can be almost doubled. Dream of the future? By no means! The battery technology should also be used in series vehicles in the coming years. 100 kWh capacity and a Power consumption of less than 10 kW / 100 km, With this recipe, the distance previously reserved for diesel vehicles seems to be within reach. They also have a small share in this 117 solar cells in the roofthat at least under favorable conditions 25 km additional range should deliver. If you roughly calculate the power consumption of the entire vehicle, the EQXX is even the first electric one-liter car.

Bionic casting: Rigid construction without unnecessary material

But it’s not just the drive system or the cell chemistry that allow the Mercedes study to achieve this enormous range. With approximately 1750 kilograms the EQXX is also incredibly light for an electric car. The engineers at Mercedes achieve this with a new type of construction of the cast components. This is called bionic casting and it allows the production of the most robust component possible with as little material as possible.

The rear end of the study was manufactured using a bionic casting process. No wall thickness is identical.

The Cast elements fully calculated by softwarewhich actually comes from the gaming area. The result: extremely aesthetic casting molds that do not have the same wall thickness at any point and even withstand crash tests, at least in simulations. In the EQXX there are components developed in this way in the front spring domes, the mount for the windshield wiper motor and in the rear section construction. B.At Mercedes, the technology can already be found in series production, but only for very small components, such as the rear seat of the belt retractor in the EQS.

Interior: vegan materials and the next level MBUX

Despite all the very technical innovations, the EQXX also has a particularly attractive interior in the best show car style. Here it goes completely vegan to, means that animal materials cannot be found. Instead, materials such as cactus and mushroom leather or bamboo fibers are used here. The highlight in the interior is the monitor in the dashboard that extends across the width of the vehicle. It is an instrument cluster and infotainment screen at the same time and shows where the journey for the MBUX system should go. The voice control “Hey Mercedes” gets one in the MBUX future vision more human character and is now shown on the screen as an animated head, the voice output also sounds more like a real person than before.
Mercedes Vision EQXX

In contrast to many other concept studies, the EQXX is a real car. It should be able to prove itself on the street.

In addition, the user interface should be significantly more variable and adapt to the needs of the occupants. So that every seat in the EQXX gets the right ambience, the seats carry Loudspeakers in the headrests. While the driver is listening to activating music, the front passenger can relax at the same time. Actuators in the seat should either enhance the sound experience or haptically support warnings. An approach that is intended to bring more individuality to the vehicle, especially on long journeys.

Outlook: The EQXX knows how to inspire

All of this should enable comfortable travel on a route that was previously unthinkable for electric cars. In addition to the technical components, the Interior amenities fit. In the future, new demands will arise here, also with a view to autonomous driving. It remains to be seen whether the EQXX will actually make its 1000 km journey without a stopover. However, it is already gratifying to see how many individual functions and components are aiming for series production. Or is the EQXX a concrete forerunner of a compact Stuttgart model? Basically it doesn’t matter, because one thing is certain: The competition is looking to Swabia and is certainly dealing with fear.
