Mercedes GLC (2022): The compact SUV is always electrified

Presentation and look: design evolution, rest revolution
For this reason, the Swabians decided on the motto: design evolution, rest revolution. And the thing about evolution is quickly explained on the GLC. Mercedes gave the GLC six centimeters more exterior length, which the wheelbase and overhangs share fraternally.

The split rear lights with a black trim strip in the middle visually underline the width of the GLC.
Visually, the Benz now comes as standard with the “Avantgarde” equipment, many chrome elements such as the indicated underride protection and window surrounds are now standard.
New rear lights with three-dimensional light graphics:
The most striking innovation at the front are the new headlights, which are now narrower towards the middle and run into the radiator grille. Depending on the equipment line, the grill also has a different shape.
In the “Avantgarde” line it is more classic and framed with chrome, the sportier “AMG line” has a matching grille that is pulled down to the outside and different bumpers.
Rear-axle steering with 4.5 degrees can be ordered as an option for the GLC, which should significantly reduce the turning circle. The two-part rear lights have a three-dimensional lighting design, and a black trim element underlines the width of the rear.
Dimensions at a glance:
• Width: 1890mm
• Height: 1640mm
• Wheelbase: 2888mm
• Trunk volume: 600-1640 liters
• Trunk capacity plug-in hybrid: 463 liters
Interior: The legroom in the GLC has increased

Large displays and the latest MBUX technology. With the new GLC, the SUV has made a giant leap.
Even in series production, the new GLC comes in the “Avantgarde” equipment line, which can be recognized, among other things, by the ventilation nozzles, which are reminiscent of the engine nacelles of an airplane.
As with the C-Class, the free-standing, 12.3-inch digital cockpit is located directly in front of the driver in the GLC. The central display is also slightly inclined towards the driver and measures 11.9 inches.
The latest generation of MBUX is of course on board. And this technology sets standards: firstly because the ergonomics are right, secondly because the icons are huge and you can operate them intuitively while driving. Third, the voice control is excellent.
Up to 600 liters of storage space in the trunk
And the space is also right: not only do passengers have enough space in the front on the comfortable seats of the AMG line, but also in the rear, thanks to sufficient legroom, they can sit comfortably.
Driving: first lap in the camouflaged GLC
Mercedes is in things SUV not what it used to be! Test manager Peter Kolb (56) drives to the next curve far too quickly and presses the button for sport mode. And what does this 4.72 meter long SUV do? It doesn’t waver, it stays on track and craves Kolb’s right foot at the apex.

On the road in the camouflaged GLC: the 265 hp four-cylinder diesel is assisted by a 23 hp electric motor. You notice that when starting and accelerating.
But what does that mean? This car is safety made of sheet metal, even the rear axle steers, by 4.5 degrees, which results in a turning circle of 10.8 meters.
Our test car has a 265 hp four-cylinder diesel and 23 hp electrical extra power, the torque amounts to 550 Nm. The only thing we don’t hear today is diesel knocking, of course, double glazing. But they have worked on the acoustics overall, better foams, more insulation, better door sealing concept.
Engines: exclusively electrified drives in the new GLC
Mercedes relies on two-liter four-cylinder units for the engines, both for the petrol and diesel versions. There will be three combustion engines with a 48-volt electrical system, and the Swabians also have four plug-in hybrids in their range.

Lümmel-Lounge: You can stretch out in the GLC rear – great entry, plenty of room for head and legs, good seating position.

Market launch and price: New GLC is likely to be a little more expensive
The question remains of the prices. Mercedes will only reveal this at the start of sales at the end of June 2022. But what is already certain: The new GLC will be a little more expensive. A GLC 200 currently starts at 48,141 euros, as a hybrid at least 56,109 are due. AUTO BILD assumes about 4000 to 5000 euros more.
Why? Of course he’s gotten bigger. On the other hand, the new GLC is also finer equipped, for example, the tailgate now always opens and closes electrically, inductive charging and seat heating are standard. And a tip for the options list: The rear-axle steering with up to 4.5 degrees is also a revolution.
