The new Mercedes S-Class is more than just a car
The S-Class is the heart of the brand, the essence of the values for which Mercedes stands. Can the new S 500 4Matic meet the high expectations?
The interior of the S-Class is a staging of luxury
Mercedes S-Class (2021): New Presentation – Connectivity Check – Info
Connectivity check in the new S-Class
The impression changes suddenly when you look into the interior. This is no longer a simple interior design, but a staging. Of luxury. Completely rearranged, lighter and more airy than before. The clunky screens from the predecessor have disappeared, have been through two separate displays replaced. The 12.3 inch instruments in front of the driver are also with 3D technology available (1178 euros). Great fun with pronounced depth effect. With brilliant graphics works that too 12.8 inch display diagonally above on the center console. One advantage of the location: you don’t have to stretch your arm far, it can remain on the center console and still reach the screen. The Menu navigation is flawless, and if you still can’t deal with it, you can Voice control of smart MBUX system use, works great.
The six-cylinder is really fun
Fast enough: even a straight six is enough to accelerate the S 500 to 100 km in 4.9 seconds.

The voluminous active multicontour seats (2380 euros) are multiple adjustable (19 motors) and with ten different massage programs fitted. And what can we say, it is actually even more comfortable than the Rolf Benz couch at home. The rear offers plenty of space and in the test car with the electrically adjustable rear seats (1856 euros) a high level of convenience. Very casual. The S 500 is powered, no, not by a V8, but by one 3.0-liter in-line six-cylinder. But it is a fine piece of mechanical engineering, with an additional electric compressor, turbo and integrated starter generator. Then do 435 hp at 5900 and 520 Nm at 1800 tours. It starts gently, reacts spontaneously to the gas, turns with relish and sounds, sorry, just as sonorous smoky-hoarse like the row six from BMW. The Mercedes own Nine-speed automatic switches very attentively, gently and almost imperceptibly, skin im Sports mode but the aisles also like to be crisp.
S 500 4Matic – a lot of cars at a high price
The S 500 is powerful, but surprisingly handy – see rear-axle steering.

In addition it was Ten degree rear axle steering for 1547 euros on board, which is amazingly handy on the one hand and incredibly small on the other Turning circle of 10.6 meters – that would be the 5.18 meters Long S-class also good for small cars. The Air suspension speaks very sensitively, reacts sensitively and even takes bad patches and frost breaks unshakable and extremely sovereign, the Benz glides gently swaying just about it. Whereby, and that’s really amazing, that does not work decoupled or somehow wrapped in wadding, but quite earthy. The S 500 drives powerful, but surprisingly handy – see rear axle steering. That fits direct and precise steering with firm, beautiful feedback. That is also remarkable low noise level, it always remains noticeably quiet on board even at high speeds, the measured 64 dB (A) at a speed of 130 km / h are outstanding.
