The noble convertible is offered on the auction platform bringatrailer.com and was built in 1999. It is therefore a late model of the R 129 series. Add-on parts and door handles painted in the vehicle color, as well as the exterior mirrors inspired by the little brother SLK.

You don’t see a Mercedes SL in yellow every day. Allegedly, only 24 copies of the R 129 in “Sunburst Yellow” were delivered.

Under the hood is the popular 5.0-liter V8 (M 113), which from 1998 delivers 306 hp and 460 Nm (previously 320 hp and 470 Nm). Power is transmitted by a five-speed automatic, which sends power to the rear wheels and accelerates the luxurious SL to 100 km/h in 6.5 seconds. At 250 km/h, the roadster is slowed down by the electronics.

Only 24 R 129 in “Sunburst Yellow”

In the last 23 years, the yellow SL from the USA has only been driven 32,842 miles, which corresponds to about 52,854 kilometers. The accident-free 500 presents itself accordingly well in the pictures. The absolute highlight of this R 129 is without a doubt the super rare paint finish in “Sunburst Yellow” (color code 685), a color that is more frequently found on the SLK (R 170). Of the more than 200,000 SLs of the R 129 series built, only 24 are said to have been delivered in “Sunburst Yellow”.

The 5.0 liter V8 got a new valve cover gasket before the sale.

Matching the eye-catching color, the first owner opted for the AMG package including the beautiful AMG five-spoke rims. The equipment leaves nothing to be desired, on board are xenon headlights, multi-contour seats, automatic air conditioning, Bose sound system and much more. In addition, the original hardtop in body color is available and will be sold with it.

Some work has been done in preparation for the sale. For example, the 18-inch AMG rims have been reworked and fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport tires in the dimensions 245/40 (front) and 275/35 (rear). Furthermore, the valve cover gasket was renewed and all fluids including the brake fluid were exchanged.

The SL makes a very neat impression

The SL 500 does not show its age in the pictures. The black interior looks very neat and the paintwork makes a very good impression. With the exception of the bonnet, the Benz should not need to be repainted. In addition, it is in its absolutely untouched original condition – another plus point.

The highest bid is 30,000 euros

And how much does such a special SL 500 with low mileage cost? The current highest bid is 30,000 US dollars, which corresponds to almost exactly 30,000 euros at the current exchange rate. It can be assumed that this price will continue to rise, because at this rate the SL would be a bargain.

The black interior with nappa leather goes well with the striking exterior. Only the wood doesn’t look quite harmonious.

For comparison: In Germany there are the cheapest Mercedes SL 500 of the later years from about 13,000 euros – but then also with correspondingly high mileage. Well-kept Designo examples can quickly cost upwards of 25,000 euros, and vehicles with low mileage in collector’s condition can sometimes crack the 50,000 euro mark – and they’re not yellow. Everyone has to decide for themselves whether that’s a plus, because you have to like “Sunburst Yellow”.
