Mercedes SLK used: Body construction quality and material exemplary
The mileage is in no way problematic. Even with the roof open, cobblestone passages succeed without rattling. And that applies to both the chassis and the body. In retrospect, the quality of body construction and material selection of the roadster that rolled off the assembly line at the Bremen plant can be considered exemplary.
But is the base engine the right choice? Yes, because it still satisfies high demands! The seven-speed automatic harmonises well with the 1.8-liter M-271 Evo-Turbo direct injection engine: only seven seconds from zero to 100 km/h are fast, and the 270 Nm of torque that comes early guarantee proper elasticity.

After eleven years, the design of the SLK still looks elegant. The third SLK generation is also the best in terms of quality.
On the other hand, the specified top speed of 237 km/h is only rarely exhausted, although the hard top remains acoustically restrained even at high speeds. The direct steering, which still works without play, and the cleanly tuned chassis ensure plenty of driving fun and dynamic reserves.
However, it is more relaxing to cruise overland in the intimately designed interior with the top down and enjoy gimmicks such as the “Airscarf” neck hairdryer (optional at the time), which reliably counteracts colds.

Amazingly moderate average consumption
On the other hand, the astonishingly moderate average consumption, which has a seven in front of the decimal point even with fun inserts, is absolutely positive. Although the then alternatively available common rail diesel would still be one to two liters more economical, but they screwed up the fun character and can annoy in old age with expensive injector problems.
Eight years later, the electrohydraulic vario-roof is still impressive: it doesn’t shy away from car washes and only has expensive joint or hydraulic problems in exceptional cases. Rarely has an old Swabian been so cool and solid at the same time.
