Mercedes Vision AMG: The AMG future is electric

Mercedes-AMG goes electric! Certainly not every car fan likes this news, but the change is inevitable – and has long been initiated. The first self-developed electric model from Affalterbach is to be presented in 2025. With the Mercedes Vision AMG show car, there is already a concrete preview of AMG’s electric future. Particularly interesting: the rear with taillights that look like exhaust pipes!

“AMG is reinventing itself. We are developing everything from scratch, from the independent AMG.EA platform to a revolutionary drive technology with which we will take performance electromobility to a new level,” promises Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG .

The production model is scheduled for 2025

The four-door Vision AMG show car impressively shows what this electric future could look like in concrete terms. Strictly speaking, the production model expected in 2025 will not be the first all-electric AMG vehicle, because the extremely limited SLS AMG Electric Drive was already available in the past – and the first EQ models with the AMG logo are already available today.

How much power will the electric supercar have?

What is particularly interesting about the Vision AMG is the platform. It goes by the name AMG.EA and was specially designed for electric AMG models. The core is an axial flux motor, which is being developed by the Mercedes subsidiary “YASA” and, despite its compact design, is said to deliver significantly more power than conventional electric motors. However, AMG still owes concrete numbers at the moment, but there is still a bit of time until 2025.

Ready for the series? The headlights consist of three individual LED elements modeled on the Mercedes star.

So let’s dedicate ourselves to the design of the spectacular study. Many elements of the record vehicle EQXX are recognizable at first glance; At the same time, the design language of the Vision AMG painted in “Alubeam Silver” is vaguely reminiscent of the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo show car presented in 2013. The overhangs are short, the wheelbase is long and the A-pillar is steeply raked. Unlike the 2013 study, however, the Vision AMG is a four-door coupe.

The headlights are based on the Mercedes star

The star-shaped headlights are definitely the highlight at the front. They are intended to look like a three-dimensional Mercedes star and consist of three LED elements on each side, which are optically connected by a light strip.

The Panamericana radiator grille, which is now an integral part of current AMG models, has been carried over into the electric era for the show car. It is optically closed and has illuminated struts. One floor up, an oversized Mercedes star is emblazoned on the hood.

Taillights or tailpipes? LEDs are stuck in the tubular tubes. So the taillights look like tailpipes!

A strip of lights is integrated into the spoiler lip at the rear. Underneath, a huge lettering makes it clear that this is an AMG model. Anyone who now thinks that the electric study has six tailpipes illuminated in red is certainly not alone. The Affalterbach-based company, on the other hand, speaks of six taillights – three per side and, curiously enough, placed extremely far down just above the diffuser – so the analogy with tailpipes is certainly not entirely coincidental.

It will still take some time before series production begins, but at Mercedes-AMG they promise that the show car will already give a concrete glimpse of the electric future of the brand. Then probably with 1000 hp plus!
