Michael Jordan shoes auctioned for a record amount of 500,000 euros

The Air Jordan 1, the first personalized pair of sneakers by basketball legend Michael Jordan, has been auctioned for € 500,000. This makes them officially the most expensive sneakers in history.

Michael Jordan is hot again. Not just the Netlfix series The Last Dance, about his last season with the Chicago Bulls, is doing well. His shoes are also very popular. The international auction house Sotheby’s sold its very first pair of Air Jordan 1 for an amount of 500,000 euros.

The shoes were owned by name Jordan Geller for years (an appropriate name if you ask us). Geller owns the shoe museum Shoezeum, which collects all kinds of personalized sneakers. The sale was therefore difficult for Geller. “They are the most iconic and coveted sneakers ever, but with the hype around The Last Dance now is the ideal time to auction the shoe ”, it sounds.

Most expensive shoe of all time

Initially, the value of the shoe was estimated between 100,000 and 150,000 dollars, but that turned out to be much better than expected. With an amount of 500,000 euros, the Air Jordan 1 is at the top of the list of most expensive sneakers sold. Until now, that record was held by the Moon Shoes, a worn-out pair of Nike running shoes. They went under the hammer for 403,000 euros last summer.

Sotheby’s explains the auction’s success as follows: “Of course Michael Jordan is one of the most recognizable athletes of all time, but this sale demonstrates above all that the sneaker world is a global and fast growing market.” This trend is also noticeable on a smaller scale. Since the re-release of the Air Jordan 1 in 2015, 217 pairs have already been sold at an average price of 852.89 euros.
