Midfielder Toornstra: Feyenoord was too anxious

Jens Toornstra has been wearing the Feyenoord shirt for almost 7 years, but never has the midfielder been so close to a good result in an away match against Ajax as on Sunday in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. “That doesn’t make it any less bad,” said the midfielder after a 1-0 defeat. “Everyone was in the locker room.”

Only the first 25 minutes of the game resembled the previous matches of Feyenoord in Amsterdam. “We only walked backwards,” acknowledged Toornstra. “We were too scared to disturb early. Ajax was in control and scored a goal. Only then did we throw away the trepidation and play football ourselves. But unfortunately we didn’t score.”

The 31-year-old Toornstra does not know why Feyenoord started so anxious. “Maybe the results from the past play a role”, he referred to a series of eighteen games in a row in the capital with only 2 points for the club from Rotterdam. “But after the first 25 minutes we dare and we are at least equal. We even get the best chances”, he referred to opportunities for Steven Berghuis, Leroy Fer and a header from Luis Sinisterra in injury time. “We should have scored at least once.”

The disappointment about the defeat won Toornstra over the satisfaction with the game of Feyenoord in the last hour of the match. “It especially hurts that we are now 6 points behind Ajax. Let’s hope that we can take our good game, especially in the second half, to the rest of the season.”
