At Nintendo Direct, Nintendo released a new release of Miitopia for Nintendo Switch. While we might be debating whether a $ 49.99 price tag is justified for this slightly expanded port, Miitopia is an issue in Russia for completely different reasons.
The game was only released in Russia from the age of 18. The reason for this is the law 436-FZ on “homosexual propaganda”, which was only passed by Putin in 2013, which criminalizes any positive statements about homosexuality in the presence of minors or via the media.
Miitopia allows same-sex relationships and that is exactly what the Russian authorities are likely to find a thorn in the side. The release from the age of 18 “for the protection of minors” is supposed to counteract this. Human Rights Watch sees it the other way round: the law puts minors at risk.
The original for Nintendo 3DS, which was released in 2017, was also rated 18+. In the past, The Sims 4, Stardew Valley and FIFA 17 were also affected for similar reasons. In the soccer game you can choose rainbow-colored shoelaces, a sign of support for the LGBTQ + community.
Tomodachi Life was once also criticized
Miitopia’s spiritual predecessor, Tomodachi Life, was once criticized for a similar topic. But not in Russia. When Tomodachi Life appeared in Japan, a bug made it possible to enter into same-sex relationships at certain points in the game. Nintendo hadn’t actually planned that, which is why the matter was patched out later. Also because the error caused the saved memory to be destroyed.
Understandably, this caused criticism in the West even before the game was announced. The statement by a Nintendo employee to AP also caused a stir. It said that Tomodachi Life wanted to offer a playful alternative world, not a real-life simulation. Nintendo later apologized in another official statement.
