All a while ago. In recent years, the Mini has become braver, Mini JCW GP times excluded. The result: recently, a Cooper S had to admit defeat to a supposedly conservative 200 hp A1.

Series Cooper S has only 178 hp after the facelift

The facelift came a few months ago. With many new colors, customizations – and less power. Due to new emission standards, the Cooper S only has 178 hp instead of 192 hp. And now? What does the person who doesn’t have enough do? The solution could come from Andreas Schmidt.

This Mini drives as beefy as it looks. The wing? The Cooper doesn’t need downforce, but it has to be a show.

The head of Maxi-Tuner from Gau-Algesheim near Frankfurt has developed a kit for the Cooper S that is intended to raise the Mini to the old level of driving pleasure. The entire kit costs 6,560 euros more than the 29,650 euros of an off-the-shelf Cooper S.

Maxi-Mini much beefier

We do the test. The basis is a current Cooper S with the boring seven-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. After the conversion, Tuner Schmidt calls his vehicle “Rebell CPR S”. What is behind the designation? First of all, the two-liter turbo four-cylinder gets new maps for gasoline and boost pressure uploaded by an additional control unit.

Wonderful when the carbonized air filter system wheezes and snorts. The increase in performance costs only 890 euros.

On the chassis side, a self-developed thread solution called “Conquistador” with adjustable dampers is used. The set-up pleases in everyday life with sporty toughness and enough residual comfort. In conjunction with the also in-house Maxwheel wheels in 18 inches, the Mini is now much more beefy.

Visually, too, he is not a child of sadness. With the colorful foiling, he looks as if he wants to drive straight to the race. The adjustable rear wing is particularly eye-catching.

Tuned Cooper S drives 244 instead of 235 km/h

During the first measurement run, it becomes clear: This Mini has steam! The production car should sprint to 100 in 6.7 seconds, the Maxi-Mini breaks through the 100 wall in a smooth six seconds. Between 3800 and 5000 tours you can clearly see that this Mini is much better in the juice than the series.

Finally, the automatic, previously known as a fun brake, is more fun. The elasticity values are impressive, the force distribution is homogeneous. top speed? 244 instead of 235 km/h, no illusion. According to the speedometer, the little one is even over 250. On to the Lausitzring, where the Cooper inspires from curve one.

There’s something: Remarkably, up to 100 km/h the tuning mini is seven tenths faster than the factory specification.

Despite only 222 hp, the ease with which it changes direction, the lateral acceleration that it builds up due to its low weight and how sustainably it pulls itself out of tight corners are impressive. There it is again, that typical mini feeling of days gone by. Go then!
