Moderna assumes that its corona vaccine will protect against the corona virus for at least one year. A top executive of the company himself said this to investors.
Almost a week ago, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Commission approved Moderna’s corona vaccine. It is thus – after Pfizer / BioNTech – the second vaccine to receive such approval in the European Union.
At least one year
All tests showed that Moderna’s corona vaccine – like that of Pfizer – offers good protection against the virus. For the time being, it is less clear how long that protection will last. However, that is not unimportant. For example, it is important to get everyone vaccinated before the first ones no longer see any protection. This is the only way to stop the spread of the virus and stop the pandemic.
Tal Zaks, Moderna’s chief medical officer, has spoken at JP Morgan’s annual healthcare conference on the duration of action of their vaccine. “Our expectation is that the vaccination will provide protection for at least one year,” he said.
After that it will possibly be possible to extend that protection with a new injection, a kind of boost. For the time being, two injections of the vaccine are needed to be well protected, and a third may be needed in the future.
The company will test people to gain certainty about this. “We will have to give people a boost to see how well the boost works. We think there is an opportunity to boost, especially in those at high risk, if needed, ”said Zaks.
