National coach Frank de Boer is hopeful that he will have Daley Blind at his disposal during the European Championship. “As far as I hear now, he is ahead of schedule,” he said at Good morning Eredivisie of pay channel ESPN. “If everything continues to go well, he can join on May 28.”
Blind is recovering from an ankle injury. Chances are that De Boer will include him on Friday in his preliminary roster for the European Championship, which starts for the Dutch national team on June 13 with a match against Ukraine.
De Boer is less positive about a possible participation of Virgil van Dijk in the European Championship. “Last time I was very negative. I hope he has made giant steps. I will discuss it with him again next week. It’s up to him too. It’s what he wants.”
Van Dijk is recovering from a serious knee injury and is not yet ready for a return to Liverpool. “I also understand that they are careful with him there. Virgil is an important player. Liverpool won on Saturday, but they don’t want another season like that after the summer.”
De Boer is positive about the chances for Wout Weghorst for a place in the European Championship selection. “He is in good shape, it looks good for him. Chances are he will be there. It is great what he has shown again this year.”
De Boer will announce his preliminary selection on Friday and will probably explain his final squad of 26 players on May 26. The Orange will gather for the first time on May 24 in the run-up to the European Championship, with the players who are then available.
It is still unclear whether the training camp in Portugal will continue due to stricter corona rules in that country. Portugal will probably let you know next week whether foreigners still have to be quarantined for two weeks after they arrive.
