This week, Natsume Atari and Taito quit together KiKi KaiKai: Kuro Mantle no Nazo for Nintendo Switch. That makes the retro fans among us rejoice, because it is a sequel to the Shoot’em Up KiKi KaiKai released for SNES in 1992: Nazo no Kuro Mantle – known in the West as Pocky & Rocky.
The sequel should also retain the 16-bit flair. The sequel is developed by Tengo Project, a development team within Natsume Atari, which consists of employees of the original. Including Toshiyasu Miyabe. Tengo Project also recently worked on The Ninja Saviors: Return of the Warriors and Wild Guns Reloaded.
Today US publisher Natsume Inc. announced the release of the game in the West. New Pocky & Rocky, the provisional western title, should appear in 2021 in this country. Incidentally, the western announcement does not provide a platform. It is quite possible that in this country you will still opt for one or the other platform. It’s not a remake, as the name might suggest, but actually a completely new title.
