Netflix is launching legal drama soon The Trial of the Chicago 7. This film by director Aaron Sorkin is based on true facts from 1968 in which seven activists were charged with conspiracy after a peaceful rally against the Vietnam war.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is about the US government’s trial of Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, David Dellinger, Tom Hayden, Rennie Davis, John Froines and Lee Weiner. These seven activists had been arrested following peaceful protests against the Vietnam War at the time of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1968.
The seven were charged with conspiracy and crossing state lines to provoke riots. The arrests and the trial of the activists provoked much outrage. Although the story dates back to 1968, it is still relevant today with the current Black Lives Matter rallies in the United States. These too have recently ended up several times in confrontations with the police and arrests.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 is the second film from director Aaron Sorkin, after Molly’s Game. He previously made a name for himself as a screenwriter for successful films such as The Social Network, Moneyball and Steve Jobs.
The cast of the new Netflix movie is impressive. We see Sacha Baron Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jeremy Strong, Mark Rylance, Frank Langella, William Hurt, Michael Keaton and Caitlin FitzGerald, among others.
Comes on October 16 The Trail of the Chicago 7 on Netflix.
