New Range Rover Sport (2022): Almost like the noble tuner

No inhibitions, please: The third Range Rover Sport is so stocky, as if it were already from Overfinch or start tech tuned. Especially when it rolls on the 23-inch wheels that can be ordered for the first time. Jaguar Land Rover CEO Thierry Bolloré wants to position the brand higher; the third generation of the Range Rover clearly follows this plan.

There is no longer a Range Rover Sport with less than six cylinders. The starting price for the D250 increases by almost 20,000 euros to 93,000 euros. This creates distance to the velar. Series are air springs, GPS, 360-degree cameras, wading depth control and Amazon’s voice recognition Alexa. Perhaps the most important new extra: the all-wheel steering, which should deliver unprecedented maneuverability and steering precision.

Exclusive and expensive pleasure: The starting price for the Range Rover Sport D250 climbs to 93,000 euros.

Number three grows in length by 70 mm, the width increases to a full two meters without a mirror. In the rear, the footwell is 31 mm longer than before, and the maximum load volume increases to 1869 liters (previously: 1761). Despite the increase in size and more technology, the curb weight remains at 2.3 tons. The Briton consists largely of aluminumwith the steel bulkhead as one of the few exceptions.

Chief engineer and project manager Erol Mustafa attaches importance to the finding, still getting an off-road vehicle on the Wheels to have asked: “We have him on Nurburgring tested, but also in the desert. The body is 35 percent stiffer, and with the two-chamber air suspension we gain another eight millimeters of ground clearance – we are now at a maximum of 285 millimeters. And the wading depth is 900 mm on Defender level.”

Up to 530 hp in the Range Rover Sport

The drive is taken over 1:1 from the large range: mostly 3.0-liter straight-six from the company’s own engine plant in Wolverhampton, eight-speed automatic transmission from ZF, all-wheel drive technology has a multi-plate clutch (previously: central differential), as an extra an electronically controlled differential lock at the rear.

Range Rover Sport

Power pack: Currently the most potent Range Rover Sport is the P530 with a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 and 530 hp.

As a crowning glory, some might consider the P530: 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8, 530 hp, 0-100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. An even wilder SVR version will follow in 2023. Also powerful: the plug-in hybrid with 510 hp, 700 Nm and (still) eligible 88 kilometers electric range.

Leather is standard in the interior

Does anyone still need the big range? The main difference: the distance between the driver’s seat and the floor is 20 millimeters lower, and there is also a more spacious center console. So you sit IN the car rather than on top like in the big range. Detailed improvements: The rear camera lens is now lower and more central so that it can see the hitch – this was previously a disadvantage when towing, where the Range Rover Sport otherwise excelled.

Range Rover Sport

Noble: The Range Rover Sport is always lined with leather. The large monitor dominates the center console.

Incidentally, the new one is so connected (e.g. over-the-air updates) that it takes two roof fins to accommodate so much technology. Modern times: leather is standard, breathable plastic seat covers cost extra. Built in Solihull, available to order now, with customers from autumn 2022.
