No winter sports, ski slopes Italy remain desolate empty

Winter sports enthusiasts will not be able to enter the ski slopes of Italy this year. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte reported today that the slopes will remain closed for the time being due to corona and that a winter sports holiday is not planned this year.

“It is not possible to allow holidays in the snow because then we get a third corona wave,” said Conte. The Prime Minister wants a European approach to the winter holidays and has already urged French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel to do so.

Winter sports 2021 had to save the season

Italian ski regions have argued for the reopening of the slopes under strict rules in order to save the tourist season somewhat. In doing so, we look closely at foreign winter sports centers that may be allowed to receive guests. France, for example, will probably decide within ten days on the reopening of the resorts for the Christmas holidays.

“If the pistes are to remain closed, it must apply to all of Europe,” said the regional president of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia. “You cannot forbid skiing in South Tyrol and you can allow it in Carinthia,” he explained, pointing to a ski neighbor region in Austria.

On Monday, the number of corona deaths in Italy passed the 50,000 mark.

Industry thinks the situation is dramatic

For the time being, the entire winter sports season is still in danger of falling into the water. This emerged from a survey by The Telegraph in the travel industry in the Netherlands and in the Alps. The ski areas fear that the entire Christmas holidays will be canceled anyway. “That would be dramatic. We hope for a quick relaxation on three sides, the measures in Austria itself, Dutch travel advice must go from orange to yellow and we would like to drop the call from the Dutch cabinet not to travel in December, ”said manager Thiebout van den Bergh of the Austrian tourist office two weeks ago. Little has changed since then.

According to director Arjen de Graaf of the Dutch Ski Association, things are not looking good: “Skiers and boarders wait until winter sports are allowed again before they book their snow holiday. We hope that we can accelerate from mid-December, but I don’t dare to give any guarantees now. ”
