Hollywood icon Hopkins’ win came as a surprise; almost all predictions assumed that the award for best actor would go to Chadwick Boseman, for his role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. It was the last film the popular actor made before passing away in August at the age of 43.
The order of the awards ceremony was also changed. Thus, it became the winner of the best film, which this year went to Nomandland, awarded first, after which the announcement of best actor. This swap made many fans think the Oscars would close with a special tribute to Boseman. But instead, many viewers were disappointed when his name was not listed as the winner.
“The Oscars were so confident that Chadwick Boseman would win that they changed the whole ceremony. Just so that his category would be last. And then Anthony Hopkins won. This is the most chaotic and disjointed thing I’ve ever seen, ”Buzzfeed journalist Spencer Althouse writes on Twitter.
“We don’t need the Oscars to honor Chadwick Boseman. We do honor him for his excellent performances, ”tweeted author Frederick Joseph.
