NVMe: Sony and WD offer SSD for PS5

Western Digital and Sony want to reach new customers with an SSD specially designed for the Playstation 5.

The Playstation 5 offers significantly more performance than the previous console thanks to its AMD APU with Zen 2 cores and an RDNA2 graphics unit. This enables gaming in 4K with 60 or sometimes even 120 frames per second. Nevertheless, the built-in SSD should probably offer the best next-gen experience for most gamers: Thanks to the built-in NVMe SSD, games sometimes load in a few seconds. The sometimes minute loading times of games like “Grand Theft Auto 5” or “The Witcher 3” are a thing of the past.

Only 825 GB of free space

However, there is a catch: Since the technology is still quite new, Sony only installs a model with 825 GB in the Playstation 5. However, this SSD can be expanded with a commercially available NVMe SSD with PCI-E 4. Now Sony and Western Digital have presented such a model, which is said to be specially optimized for the PS5. Specifically, it is a new edition of the WD Black SN 850. This meets the Sony requirements for a read speed of 5,500 MB per second and also offers a heat sink that is supposed to protect the SSD from overheating.

Standard model significantly cheaper

Specially designed for the PS5, the SSD achieves read speeds of up to 7,000 MB per second and is available in 1 TB and 2 TB capacities. The smaller model costs 208 euros, while the larger model costs 315 euros. Those who find these prices too high should take a look at the otherwise identical Western Digital Black SN 850. This costs significantly less at 100 euros (1TB) or 190 euros (2TB) and should offer about the same performance.
