Obtain Schufa information free of charge – this is how it works

We show you step by step how you can get free Schufa information. Plus: alternatives to Schufa.

Do you want to find out which details the Schufa (“Schutzgemeinschaft für Allgemeine Kreditsicherung”) has saved about you? No problem: we will show you step by step how to get free Schufa information. You can have an extract sent to you once a year free of charge.

How to apply for Schufa information free of charge

In order to receive information about your current score from Schufa once a year, you neither need a paid subscription nor a service provider to support you. According to Article 15 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) of the EU, every citizen in Germany from whom Schufa stores data has the right to receive a copy of their stored data.

The Schufa offers information free of charge, but makes it a bit cumbersome to get the free copy. But this is very easy with the following way:

1. Open the website www.meineschufa.de

2. Scroll all the way down and click at the very bottom of the website under “Data copy (according to Art. 15 GDPR) – Here you will find all the information that Schufa stores about you” on “To the form”.

Schufa will send you a free copy of your Schufa score.

4. To urge you to make a paid purchase, the site often shows coupon codes that you don’t need either – click them all! The annual information is free for every citizen anyway. In addition, Schufa wants to convince you to book a subscription to “MeineSchufa compact”. You don’t need that either!

5. Click in the right column under “Data copy (according to Art. 15 GDPR)” on “Order now”.

The free data copy is sufficient. You do not need an expensive subscription to the Schufa.

Apply for an extract in good time

In addition to the Schufa, there are other credit agencies (see below), some of which also use different data. You can have free copies sent to you from all providers and view them. The information that you receive here is also sufficient, for example, to prove the creditworthiness of tenants. You don’t have to make any expensive applications. It makes sense to get a copy before you start looking for an apartment. It can take up to two months for the provider to send the data. It is usually sent by post.

Beware of paid subscriptions

In general, with all providers, make sure that you only

a copy of the data in accordance with Article 15 of the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)

want to have. Because many providers want to sell you a subscription, but you don’t need it. Make sure of that and be careful not to be misled when ordering.

That is in the Schufa information

The excerpt from Schufa informs you which data is stored about you. You will also find out where the data came from and to whom it was forwarded. In addition, Schufa also provides information on how you have received the requested probability values with regard to payment default in the last twelve months. With this scoring, the Schufa creates a prognosis for the future based on the experience it has gathered. The Schufa calculates the probability with which an applicant as a customer of a company will meet his payment obligations. You can request the copy of the data online at www.meineschufa.de or from the consumer service by telephone on 0611 – 92780.

Attention: Do not hire a service provider

Anyone can order the data copy at Schufa quickly and easily. Under no circumstances is it necessary to hire a service provider for this!
