If you like to spend your vacation or your free time in the mountains, you will find some applications in the app stores of the major manufacturers to help you plan. We’ve looked at some of them.
Off to the mountains with Komoot
There are two different price models for Komoot, which plans hiking tours as well as bike tours for you: With Komoot Maps you get access to the maps of the region that you have licensed. The complete package costs just under 30 euros one-time, individual packages for certain regions cost just under 4 euros. You get the first region free of charge. For large tours over several days there is a premium package that costs around 5 euros per month and offers some additional functions such as tour weather or live tracking of your current position. A comparison of the two licenses can be found on the Komoot website.
If you would like to plan a hiking tour, simply select the sport “Hiking” at the beginning. You then have various criteria such as the length of time for the tour, the level of difficulty and the starting point. Many of the tours are illustrated in sections, and you will also receive tips for rest areas and sights along the way. Once you have found the right route, you can also download it to your smartphone and then start navigating.
Especially on popular hikes, you can see the clear added value of the large Komoot community here – there should be a total of around 15 million users of the app. They diligently contribute their own images of the hikes and sights along a route. As a result, you can already get an almost complete picture of what to expect along the way when making your selection.
The tour dates are also helpful. There you will receive an assessment of the skills you need and the required level of fitness. In the altitude profile you can see where you start, how many meters you have to climb and what average speed is calculated. Especially when planning with children or less experienced hikers, the paths and the surfaces are also important in order to assess possible difficulties and challenges.
So if you are an avid cyclist and hiker, Komoot is a good choice. Whether you need the premium version or Komoot Maps is sufficient, you can test with a monthly subscription at low cost.

Bergfex: The app for outdoor tracking and tours
Another all-rounder with a clear focus on mountain hiking is Bergfex. According to Bergfex, the focus is on outdoor activities such as running, hiking or walking, but also cycling or ski tours. In total there are over 100,000 GPS tours with a focus on Europe.
When searching for the right tour, similar filter criteria are available to you as with Komoot: distance, ascent and duration of the hike. As a result, you will receive a list of suggestions in which you can see not only the distance, but also the level of difficulty and the average duration of the hike.
After entering the search criteria, you will receive a list of suggestions for your tours including the level of difficulty, duration and altitude.
For each tour there are numerous pictures by the community members as well as an evaluation of technology, endurance, landscape and adventure. Bergfex also provides you with the optimal months in which you should do the hike and a detailed description.
Bergfex is also available in two versions – the free version and the pro versions. This costs just under 2 euros for a monthly subscription and just under 12 euros for an annual subscription. For this sum you get, among other things, additional map variants, the offline function for the map material and an advertising-free app.
