Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt are going to join forces and make a movie together. It is about the film adaptation of the novel The Water Dancer from Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Presenter Oprah Winfrey and actor Brad Pitt both have their own film studio. The two studios, Harpo Films (Oprah) and Plan B (Brad Pitt), are now teaming up to adapt the award-winning novel The Water Dancer.
The Water Dancer
The two studios will work on the novel The Water Dancer by author Ta-Nehisi Coates from 2019. The Water Dancer entered the Hardcover Fiction Best Sellers list of The New York Times and was also included by Oprah Winfrey’s book club.
The novel is about Hiram Walker, a man who was born to a white plantation owner and a black slave. Immediately after his birth, Hiram’s mother was resold by his father. As a result, Hiram has no memories of his mother. Until he almost drowns after an accident. After that experience, he has a superpower that allows him to transport himself and others over gigantic distances.
Ta-Nehisi Coates, the author of the novel, will also provide the script for the film. Kamilah Forbes was brought on board as a producer.
Not the first collaboration
It is not the first time that the studios of Oprah Winfrey and Brad Pitt have joined forces. They did that before for the film Selma. That film is about the marches from Selma to Montgomery in 1965 led by Martin Luther King Jr. With those marches, protesters wanted to demand equal rights for African Americans, but the peaceful marches were disrupted by heavy-handed police intervention.
Selma was directed by Ava DuVernay, who also 13th made. In that film, Oprah Winfrey herself had a small role of Annie Lee Cooper, a 54-year-old woman who beats up a sheriff for not being allowed to register to vote.
It is not yet known when the filming of The Water Dancer will appear and the cast is not known yet.
