Early this year there was a lot of criticism when it became known who were nominated for the awards. For example, only white actors and actresses had a chance to win a figurine in the main categories in February. Amanda Berry, the boss of the British Academy Film Awards, said at the time that he regretted that there was so little diversity in the list.
The nominees and winners of the BAFTAs are chosen by members of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts working in the industry. The nomination and voting process, among other things, is now being examined by the committee. Particular attention is paid to diversity, groups that are not well represented and possible – unconscious – prejudices of members.
The research should provide solutions for a “positive change” within the industry, the organization says. The results of the investigation and the committee’s recommendations are expected in the summer.
