Overview: Services with secure 2-factor authentication

2-factor authentication (2FA) offers more protection than passwords. How to find out which services support the 2FA function

You can read regularly in our PC-WELT that passwords are anything but secure. Strong and individual access codes for all online accounts can only be implemented using a password manager such as Keypass, Lastpass & Co. Our guide gives you an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the individual tools.

In principle, more protection than passwords, which can be guessed, intercepted or stolen, is offered by 2-factor authentication (2FA): This procedure requires the combined proof of identity of a user via two different, i.e. independent factors. Perhaps the best-known example is withdrawing money from ATMs, which only works with a bank card and PIN.

Two-factor authentication can be implemented in different ways for online accounts: using an app, a hardware token, biometric features such as fingerprints, an additional email address or SMS. We also provide a detailed guide for this.

Online registration using two independent factors (2FA) is more secure than using a password. This list on the Internet shows which services 2FA offer.

But beyond the technical implementation, the question arises as to which services support the 2FA function at all. The answer to this can be found on the website “2FA Directory”, which offers you an excellent overview of the German-language selection. Sorted into almost 40 categories from “Backup and Sync” to “VPN Provider”, you can find out whether and, if so, how a provider implements the second factor. For example, those who already use the authenticator app on their mobile phones may prefer a provider with “software token” support. Users for whom sending an SMS is sufficient for the one-time code make their selection accordingly. With 2FA Directory it is also possible to use the search field to specifically check the provider of your choice. So you don’t have to go through the individual lists.

Tip:

Activate 2FA for the Fritzbox – this is how it works
