Overwatch 2 Preview: Inspired by The Avengers Endgame

Overwatch 2 delivers a real story, and Blizzard draws inspiration from Marvel’s brilliant character design. Tracer is reminiscent of Black Widow; several characters inherit the dry humor of Robert Downey Jr. in the role of his life as Tony Stark aka Iron Man. Can we expect a big, emotional endgame-style finale? Overwatch 2 in the story special.

With Marvel, the history of the ensemble made its big comeback: Jason Bourne is a loner, James Bond will do his solo tour again in No Time to Die in September. Marvel films are different: Even if Robert Downey Jr. described himself as “billionaire, philanthropist, playboy” in the role of his life as Tony Stark and in Iron Man he still acted as the solo hero who tended to be in constant To bring difficulties. So he needs his Buddy War Machine (Don Cheadle) and his “They want each other, they don’t want to, they still love each other” friend Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). For The Avengers, he becomes the brain of the superhero special force, but he also needs the others: The flying skill of Special Agent Black Widow, which is close to Overwatch 2s Tracer. And Captain America, the soul of the team, the moral compass. A guy like Winston. Yes, Overwatch 2 feels a bit like The Avengers: Endgame.

Overwatch: what happened so far:

Also because the team broke in both plants at the beginning. Everyone goes their own way, fate and death unite them again in the fight against a common enemy.

“People want to know what happened when Winston hit the” Initiate Overwatch “button,” said Lydia Bottegoni, senior vice president of story at Blizzard. “It’s funny because we are often asked about the parallels, of course , In fact, the story of Overwatch 2 was developed long before Avengers: Endgame. Nevertheless, Marvel is of course an inspiration, of course. Everyone here in the studio saw the films, we talk about them, analyze what works so well with them. The chemistry between the Avengers is great because it is where completely different characters come together who hold together like a family when it matters. ”

“I think the great strength of these two worlds is that everyone lives their own life and has returned there after Overwatch 1. Some have families, others have rejoined their friends – the natural habitat of a gunslinger is the wild west, not the big city. And of course we can play and flirt with it. ”There are these figures that Overwatch missed: certainly tracers, who as pilots never said goodbye to them. Others have moved away more and have to find their way back. “That makes for an exciting story, if not everyone starts from the same position.” That is why they put a certain heaviness and dramaturgy in the opening sequence and Winston’s decision:

“You are a team, like a family. Winston also knows that he has to tear these characters out of their lives, which they have just rebuilt. And that he must of course expose her to dangers. ”A film called“ Overwatch: What Has Happened So Far ”shows how family members struggle with this decision – for example Reinhardt’s daughter:“ You gave everything to Overwatch, dedicated your whole life. They threw you out, now they suddenly want to go back? Seriously? Why? ”Exciting too: Overwatch 2 asks many questions that Avengers: Endgame also asked. Because anyone who has seen Infinity War knows that humanity felt abandoned by the Avengers. And that the team broke up because they couldn’t protect them. Civilians alienate with the Avengers and things have changed in Overwatch 2 as well: “In this scene in Paris there are police officers who know who the Overwatch are. Others cannot imagine anything about it because the special unit has not appeared for a long time. ”We remember that the Overwatch 2024 was officially broken up under the Petras Act and that contact between agents was punished.

The locations: well known, yet fresh, new and inspiring

The locations of the game are meant to tell a story and feel new, but still appear familiar – a city that dresses the world of ancient Egypt with its sarcophagi and magnificent pharaohs’ robes in architecture. “Or let’s take Toronto, our first push map that we showed. There’s the Racoons Curling Club because Canadians love curling. Everything is very dominated by ice hockey, and we take the silhouette and, for example, the masonry of real houses in Toronto and transform them into the future. ”Then there is Monte Carlo: with majestic palaces, futuristic super athletes who park in front of casinos with folding tires , but also a racetrack and workshop that contains what Formula 1 could perhaps depict in years to come. ”

Blizzard accesses its multinational crew at its headquarters in Irvine near Los Angeles. “We have Brazilian colleagues who are working on Rio de Janeiro. Swedes who work on the Gothenburg map or Canadians who design the Toronto map. Because they know best what constitutes national identity. What is the city proud of, what defines it – Toronto has a giant ice hockey statue, and the buildings look futuristic, but a Canadian would still recognize the shape and silhouette of many buildings. That is the goal, ”said creative director Jeff Kaplan as part of the Blizzcon panel.

The Overwatch universe: created as an antithesis to pop culture

“When we started in Overwatch (1), we defined the mantra:“ An inspiring future earth worth fighting for ”. Translated: “An inspiring future that is worth fighting for”. That is why we chose this very colorful art design driven by fluorescent colors. You may remember Bastion’s character trailer: where this colossus is covered by a moss machine, his friend, a little bird comes by, sits down and sings a song to him. That’s the atmosphere we wanted to convey. ”For their design bible, Blizzard’s concept art team first created Cairo and designed holographic heads on pyramids and a high-tech world that feels familiar. Hey Blizzard, didn’t you want to give us those cool robo camels we saw on graphics? And just in case you haven’t noticed: Overwatch should also feel like home for fans of other Blizzard games.

Now Warcraft is much darker, but Torbjörn is clearly inspired by Muradin from Warcraft 3: mighty beard, shiny armor, blue LEDs on it and his tool and gripper arm are preserved in bright colors. “We didn’t want to create a dystopia where everything is dark and terrible, but rather a happy utopia – a paradise that is in danger,” explains the chief author. “That’s why I love Tracer so much, because no matter what happens and even when the world is in pieces, it always has a smile on its face, always stays positive.” This is also evident in the first missions of Overwatch 2: “Warning, Attention, your pilot is speaking here. You can now switch your electrical devices back on, ”quips Tracer from the cockpit. Winston loads his Tesla cannon, Mai tests her shock freeze cube.

A scene like it could have come from a Marvel film – hell is going on downstairs, Paris is under an invasion of the new enemy of the zero sector, but a gag must never be missing. Paris, however, looks like something out of a Pixar film: brightly colored, with razor-sharp textures. And even if a robot army attacks the French capital, it all reminds more of Disney than Call of Duty. Police officers, for example, look like a mixture of musketeer and knight, and an older Frenchman throws his baguette stick onto the brightly painted iRobots. And yet with the right amount of drama: Similar to Thanos, the Ominös with their titan ‘Mechs are overpowering. This destroys our Overwatch jet in the Paris mission and puts the team in dire straits. At the heart of Overwatch 2’s story is the omnic crisis – the robots’ uprising against humans, their creators. In Overwatch 2, the Omnics’ war against humanity is rekindled – the robots are being misused by the Null Sector. But what role does Talon play here? Talon is the counter-movement to Overwatch, consisting of Widowmaker, Reaper, Sombra, Moira and Sigma. Bodybuilder Mauga was recently confirmed as a new tank for Talons and countered by Reinhardt …
