The new streaming service Paramount + has an official start date. At least in the USA it starts on March 4, 2021.
In addition to the USA, Paramount + will also be launched in Latin America on that date. In Scandinavia, on the other hand, it should start shortly afterwards, on March 25, 2021. Australia, in turn, will have its turn in mid-2021, according to the official press release. Paramount + is to replace the previous CBS All Access, which is why there is a rebranding in Canada, for example. Paramount + will later also be launched in other regions.
In Germany, as in the case of Warner’s HBO Max, it will probably be a while before we see Paramount +. Because with us ViacomCBS has concluded agreements with Amazon and Netflix. That’s why, for example, “Star Trek Discovery” is running on Netflix, while Amazon Prime Video has “Star Trek: Picard” up its sleeve. Paramount + is another streaming offer that competes directly with providers such as the aforementioned Amazon Prime Video, Netflix and of course Disney +.
Most studios are currently striving to establish their own streaming services, as they then have more control over their catalog and can take income with them without middlemen like Netflix. Due to the increasing fragmentation of the streaming market, the competition is of course increasing. After all, only the least customers will subscribe to more than two or three providers in the long term.
Streaming offensive: when does it get too much?
Paramount can use films from Paramount Pictures. B. also attract with TV programs from Showtime, CBS, BET, MTV, Comedy Central, Smithsonian and Nickelodeon. Brands like “SpongeBob SquarePants” are also part of the studio’s repertoire. We are curious to see whether the film studios’ plan works and whether the customers are ready to spread their financial resources and their attention over several streaming providers.
