If you use Windows Hello, you can use it not only to log into Windows, but also to some password managers, such as Keepass. That’s how it’s done.
Password manager: Start Keepass with Windows Hello
Windows Hello is an on-board tool in Windows 10. It allows you to log into your Windows account using your fingerprint or facial recognition. The technology is considered safe, also because it requires high-quality hardware. A camera suitable for Windows Hello is usually not available for less than 90 euros. A fingerprint scanner for the USB port is available from 30 euros. Many tablets and notebooks have Windows Hello hardware built in.
1. First activate Windows Hello for finger or face recognition via “Windows symbol -› Settings – ›Accounts -› Login options “.
2. NewsABC.net the Keepass plug-in Keepass Win Hello to your computer. This consists of the file “Keepasswinhelloplugin.plgx”. Now copy this file into the Keepass plug-in directory, which by default is located under “C: Program Files (x86) KeePass Password Safe 2”.
3. Start Keepass and enter your master password as usual. Select “Tools -› Options – ›Windows Hello”.
With a plug-in for the Keepass password manager, you can open the program with Windows Hello, i.e. by facial recognition or fingerprint.
If there is a checkmark next to “Use quick unlock via Windows Hello if it is available”, Windows Hello works to unlock Keepass after the password manager was in standby mode via Ctrl-L. In order to be able to unlock Keepass without entering your master password, you also have to tick “Store Key in the Windows Credential Manager”. This saves your master password in an encrypted version in the Windows Hello function. This is considered safe, at least as long as nobody gets their hands on your computer. However, very security-conscious users might shy away from having their master password for Keepass saved in this way.
So that Windows Hello takes effect when the Keepass program starts, you must first configure the “Keepass Win Hello” plug-in within Keepass. To do this, check “Store keys in the Windows Credential Manager”.
Back to the settings of the plug-in in Keepass: Note also the time span that you can select under the option “Store Key in the Windows Credential Manager”. In this way you determine how long the unlocking with Windows Hello works automatically and when the entry of the master password is due again.
