Pfizer’s corona vaccine may already be in Europe before Christmas

It is not unlikely that we will be the first to receive corona vaccines in Europe before Christmas. The director of Pfizer Netherlands, Merc Kapitein, said this on Dutch television. The company is developing one of the most promising corona vaccines together with BioNtech. Part of it is produced in Puurs. Pfizer hopes their vaccine will be approved by mid-December.

The corona vaccine from pharmaceutical giant Pfizer and the German company BioNTech is one of the most promising vaccines against SARS-CoV-2. According to preliminary test results, it appears to be as much as 95 percent effective.

The companies therefore decided together to apply for early approval from the American pharmaceutical watchdog FDA on Friday. If that approval comes, the drug could already be partially on the market.

Such same approval will be requested in Europe. Marc Kaptein, medical director of Pfizer Netherlands, is optimistic about when their vaccine will be available. He spoke about this in the Dutch program News hour. Captain hopes to have that corona vaccine available in Europe before Christmas. According to him, that would be a dream scenario that becomes reality.

5 million vaccines in Belgium

It is not yet clear how many doses will be involved. Some of these vaccines are currently being produced in Pfizer’s factory near Puurs. Our country ordered 5 million doses of the Pfizer / BioNtech vaccine through the European Union. This means that 2.5 million Belgians can be vaccinated, since everyone needs two doses.
