Anyone who bought Tesla shares ten years ago can look forward to a magnificent return today. The value of the papers has risen by more than 22,000 percent since the IPO. Anyone who bought one of the electric car manufacturer’s first models in the early days also benefits from the increase in value, as an auction on the Bring a Trailer auction platform shows.
On Friday, a Tesla Roadster from 2008 changed hands there for the equivalent of around 150,000 euros (182,000 US dollars) – that’s almost double the price of the new one.
When the owner bought the car 13 years ago, Tesla was still a little-known automaker that didn’t even make the body itself. The Roadster, Tesla’s first production vehicle, is a fully electric sports car based on the Lotus Elise. The first 100 of these roadsters were then sold as “Signature One Hundred” limited editions. The car that has now been put up for auction is No. 38 of this original 100.
