While the traffic restrictions were extended this weekend and widened to the whole country, the Portuguese authorities could also adopt new health measures to fight against the resumption of the pandemic.

(ASdN) – With 10,176 new infections and 118 deaths linked to covid-19, the Portuguese health authorities reported on Friday the highest figures since the start of the health crisis. To better fight the virus, the government says it is ready to tighten the screw a little more.

After having extended and extended the curfew and restrictions on movement, the country is indeed considering “adopting more severe measures”, Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced to the press at the end of last week. According to AFP, the timetable has already been established.

Hospitals under pressure

The program for the week promises to be busy. A meeting with the experts should thus take place Tuesday morning at the headquarters of Infarmed, the Portuguese authority for drugs and health products. In the afternoon, the President of the Republic will receive the parties represented in Parliament for the potential establishment of a new state of emergency. And from Thursday, the country should thus reconfine itself.

As a reminder, in a state of health emergency since November 9, Portugal had eased its restrictions as Christmas approached, before tightening them for the New Year. According to the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, the country’s hospitals are indeed under “enormous pressure” with, last week, more than 3,000 people hospitalized, including more than 500 in intensive care.
