If you have a VDSL2 Internet connection and operate a powerline network in your home network, this can result in reduced bandwidth or interruptions in the online connection.
Because the frequency ranges that VDSL2 use with download rates from 50 Mbit / second and Powerline adapter partially overlap. If the telephone copper cable for VDSL2 and power lines for powerline transmission are close together, the interference signals from the powerline network will affect the data transfer of VDSL.
If you have a current Powerline adapter from Devolo from the Magic series, you can eliminate or minimize these malfunctions with a firmware update. Devolo calls this function VDSL-Performer: Here, powerline adapters and routers exchange information about the VDSL profile, which defines the frequency ranges in which data transmission for the Internet download or upload takes place. In this way, every powerline adapter can adjust its transmission power in critical frequency ranges so that interference no longer occurs. A few hours later, the adapters independently check whether these settings ensure that the Powerline and VDSL2 coexist without problems, and readjust them if necessary.
A firmware update for the Powerline adapter from the Magic series from Devolo corrects problems with the VDSL-2 Internet connection.
The exchange of information between the powerline adapter and router takes place using the TR-064 standard, which must therefore be activated in the router. In addition, the VDSL Performer currently only works with certain routers – the Fritzbox models 7430, 7490, 7530 and 7590 from Fritz OS 7.20 and with the Telekom Speedport Smart 3. Check the router menu to check whether TR-064 is allowed in the Fritzbox : Under “Home network -› Network – ›Network settings”, the option “Allow access for applications” must be selected under “Home network shares”. In contrast to TR-069, TR-064 only allows a connection to the router from the home network.
The Magic adapters from Devolo automatically get the latest firmware ex works. You can check this in the browser menu of the adapter: Under “System -› Firmware update ”, the two options“ Check regularly whether updated firmware is available ”and“ Install updated firmware automatically ”must be selected. Another way is to manually import new firmware. To do this, look for the downloads for your adapter on the Devolo website. When you have found the firmware, download the corresponding BIN file to a PC in the home network. In the adapter menu then click on “System -› Search for firmware file … “and enter the path to the download.
The update brings the new function VDSL Performer, with the help of which adapters and routers can agree on trouble-free operation.
If you have older dLAN adapters from Devolo, the Devolo Cockpit management software offers you a way of reducing interference. In order to optimally set up the entire powerline network, you must carry out the following steps for each individual adapter. To do this, click in the overview on the first adapter that you want to adapt. With a click on the gray tab at the bottom right of the adapter symbol, the menu opens, in which you select the top symbol with the arrow and the gearwheel. Now go to “Settings for the PLC device -› VDSL ”. There, please mark the appropriate VDSL profile for your Internet connection. The Fritzbox, for example, reveals whether profile 17a or 35b is correct under “Internet -› DSL information – ›DSL” in the “Profile” line.
Then confirm with “OK”. The third option “SISO mode” should definitely reduce possible interference. However, it also limits the possible transmission rate in the powerline network considerably. Since the dLAN adapters 500 and 550 only work in SISO mode anyway, there are no VDSL settings for them in the Devolo Cockpit.
