It is still uncertain whether expectant mothers can transmit a Covid-19 infection to their unborn children. Now two dramatic cases show that an infection of the mother can possibly even have fatal consequences for the fetuses, as reported by “Bild”.

Near Tel Aviv, a 26-year-old woman in the 36th week of pregnancy no longer felt her child’s movements. Previously, the unvaccinated woman had mild Covid-19 symptoms, such as the “Jerusalem Post” reported. A similar case occurred in Ashdod at the beginning of the month: an expectant mother lost her baby in the 25th week of pregnancy.

In both cases, the suspicion of a link between the infection and the stillbirth was confirmed – and that the mothers transmitted the virus to the fetuses. Both babies were retrospectively diagnosed with Covid-19. Transmission via the placenta is very rare and only happens in one to three percent of cases, according to obstetrician and gynecologist Arnon Wiznitzer in “Bild”.

Although there is so far hardly any data on the tolerance and effectiveness of corona vaccines in pregnant women and their babies – Biontech and Pfizer started a study on the use of their corona vaccine in pregnant women on February 15, 2021 – advises Wiznitzer in view of the events Pregnant women to be vaccinated. In Israel alone, 39 pregnant women are currently infected, including ten in critical condition. Out of 25 children under 18 who are hospitalized, five are newborns.
