PS5 owners have been waiting for VRR support on their consoles for a long time. This week, Sony finally released an update for the Playstation 5 that supports a variable refresh rate (VRR) in selected games and with a suitable TV or monitor. This allows the display device’s refresh rate to be synchronized with that of the console. Overall, this should ensure a smoother image and prevent tearing.
Frame rate partially doubled
But VRR on the Playstation 5 sometimes even doubles the frame rate in selected games. The technical experts of the Youtube channel Youtuber El Analista De Bits and WCCFTech took a closer look at the support of VRR on the Playstation 5 and uncovered some surprises.
Blockbuster with more frames per second
The frame rate in “Spider-Man: Remastered” in Fidelity mode increases from a fixed 30 fps to up to 59 fps. If you switch to RT performance mode, you can also achieve up to 95 fps instead of 60 fps. The title “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart” in Fidelity mode is also interesting: While the frame rate is limited to 30 frames per second without VRR, it can increase to up to 60 fps with VRR. Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition displays up to 80 frames per second with VRR in RT mode instead of the fixed 30 frames per second.
Free performance boost
However, you have to keep in mind that the FPS rates mentioned are top values. In practice, the frame rate levels off somewhat lower. Still, VRR on the PS5 brings a welcome performance boost in supported games.
