PSV has recovered in the Eredivisie from Wednesday’s home defeat against AZ (1-3). The team of trainer Roger Schmidt fell behind at Sparta early on, but quickly left the team from Rotterdam at the start of the second half. It eventually turned 3-5.
For PSV it meant the first victory of the new year. The team from Eindhoven lost a lead of two goals (2-2) at Ajax on Sunday, after which the defeat against AZ followed three days later. PSV therefore had to win to keep the leader Ajax in its sights.
In the initial phase, a new surprise seemed imminent. After Pablo Rosario lost the ball, Bryan Smeets shot the ball nicely into the goal in the 4th minute: 1-0. Rosario wore the captain’s armband because Denzel Dumfries started on the reserve bench. The same was true for top scorer Donyell Malen. Schmidt is careful with his most important players because of the busy match schedule. Malen only participated in three league games from start to finish this season.
Shortly before half time, the striker had to enter the field. Cody Gakpo was hit on the foot and had to be replaced. Gakpo fell out against Ajax with an ankle injury and therefore missed the confrontation with AZ. At the entrance of Malen it was already 1-1. Mauro Júnior equalized halfway through the first half on instructions from Noni Madueke.
Schmidt received a yellow card from referee Bas Nijhuis in the first half because he criticized him. Schmidt and Nijhuis also argued at the end of October when PSV played at Vitesse and lost 2-1. Schmidt then lashed out at the referee afterwards at the press conference.
PSV quickly decided the match in the initial phase of the second half. Malen scored 1-2 in the 47th minute. Madueke took care of the 1-3 almost immediately afterwards and has been involved with eleven goals so far this season: six goals and five assists.
Philipp Max let PSV run further away in the 71st minute (1-4), but the Eindhoven team still ran into problems. Substitute Danzell Gravenberch scored 2-4 in the 75th minute and Reda Kharchouch (also a substitute) used a penalty kick in the 87th minute. PSV held their ground and Malen made the final decision in injury time: 3-5. Malen now has nine goals in the Eredivisie this season.
