Recover deleted messages in Whatsapp

Accidentally deleted photos and messages in WhatsApp? Don’t worry, you can restore chat history.

A single message to delete the entire chat history or photos in WhatsApp is quickly done. That’s why it’s very likely that it happens accidentally. But because WhatsApp does not have a recycle bin like you know it from Windows, the contents are and will remain deleted – at least almost! Because with these tricks you can still restore your WhatsApp messages on your Android phone.

Set up WhatsApp

This is how the first steps work

Recover deleted messages from last day

You recently deleted a message and now you remember that you would rather keep the entry. Then the chat history can be restored quite easily. Because Whatsapp automatically stores a local backup of your messages in the cell phone memory every night at around 2 a.m. If the deleted message is within this time window, then no new backup has been created and you can restore the chat history. To do this, proceed as follows:

  1. Uninstall the WhatsApp app on your Android phone. Press and hold the app icon in the app menu, then tap

. Or you go through the settings of Android; tap here

    Apps – WhatsApp – Uninstall

  2. Load

                                                                                                                                   WhatsApp again
, start the app and verify your phone number – just like when you first logged in.

  3. Now you have to confirm that the backup file found should be restored.

In this way, only the state of the immediately preceding day can be restored. If you want to restore previous Whatsapp messages, it gets a bit more complicated. But with the following instructions you can also retrieve older deleted chats and messages.

New messages and chat histories between the last backup and the app uninstall are lost. Unfortunately, you have to put up with this if you want to restore the deleted messages from the last backup.

Recover older deleted messages

If the trick above does not work, the deleted message is not included in the standard backup. But you don’t have to give up yet. There are a number of other WhatsApp backups on your smartphone that you can restore. You need a file manager for this. One is already included on many current Android smartphones. Otherwise, install about

                                                                                                                                        Total Commander

  1. Navigate to Whatsapp backup storage. Usually it is

    / WhatsApp / Databases /

  2. In any case you will find the chat file msgstore.db.crypt8 (possibly also msgstore.db.crypt12) as well as older backups according to the pattern msgstore- YYYY-MM-DD.db.crypt8 in the “Databases” folder.

  3. To revert to a backup of an older date (YYYY-MM-DD), uninstall WhatAapp (see above).

  4. Start the file manager and rename the file msgstore.db.crypt8 (or msgstore.db.crypt12), e.g. to msgstore.db.crypt8.icherung (or msgstore.db.crypt12.icherung).

  5. Now rename the desired older backup to msgstore.db.crypt8 (or msgstore.db.crypt12).

  6. Then install

                                                                                                                                            WhatsApp again
and accept the restore of the saved messages when you start the app for the first time.

Chats that took place between the selected backup and the time of deinstallation are irretrievably lost.

Back up and restore Whatsapp messages on iPhone

On iPhone, you can back up Whatsapp messages by regularly creating backups via iTunes and then later restore the lost messages using these backups. In the settings, you can also use the chat settings to create backups of the chat history manually or automatically.

Transfer chats from the old device to a new smartphone

Whatsapp not only saves all chats locally (at 2 a.m. each time), but also stores the backups on Google Drive (Android) or iCloud (iOS). If you change your smartphone and want to take the messages sent and received via WhatsaApp with you, you can easily do it via Google Drive or iCloud. Before switching, you should initiate the backup in the chat backup settings. On the new device, you then log in with your Apple or Google account and can then restore the chat history.
