Redmi Note 9S review: We tried the battery runner

Redmi Note 9S test

With some Redmi smartphones, Xiaomi serves the middle class of well under 400 euros and starts with the Redmi Note 9S from April 28 even for less than 200 euros. This is a very typical procedure for Xiaomi and always brought the previous smartphones to the top of the bestseller lists. Only the name is different this time, because the Redmi Note 9 Pro is sold by us as the Redmi Note 9S. Nobody knows why, in my eyes that only creates confusion. An equally typical thing for the manufacturers, the slightly confusing portfolio.

However, the concept implemented by the Chinese, who want to offer a completely uncompromising Android middle class, is less confusing. This requires a data sheet that leaves little to be desired, at least at first glance. Nowadays it means a generous display with Full HD resolution, a working memory of at least 4 GB RAM, a lot of data storage and modern standards such as USB-C. The only thing missing from the Redmi Note 9S is the NFC module, which is necessary for Google Pay.

Redmi Note 9S: fast processor and huge battery

  • 6.67 ″ FHD + display, Gorilla Glass 5
  • Snapdragon 720G chip, 4/6 GB RAM
  • 64/128 data storage
  • 5020 mAh battery, USB-C, 18 W quick charge
  • 48 MP camera + ultra wide angle, depth sensor, macro
    16 MP front camera
  • WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5, infrared transmitter, fingerprint sensor, jack connection
  • Android with Google apps ex works
  • Colors: blue, gray, white

Basically, the Redmi Note 9S is typical for Xiaomi. It offers reasonable processing, in this case also a huge battery, still an infrared transmitter, dual SIM and of course a 48 MP camera. We should not expect too much from this, the integrated camera sensor can provide decent snapshots in bright daylight, but fails due to complicated tasks. Lowlight? Let it go, you would normally have to invest a few euros more. I only need the ultra wide angle of the quad camera.

Night mode is available, but disappointing.

Ultra wide angle can also be used on edge.

If you want more when it comes to the display, you don’t have to compromise on the screen size. It is 6.67 inches in total. It’s pretty powerful and personally too big for me. In terms of quality, you can tell the panel that it is a cheaper LCD. It offers rich colors, but doesn’t look as plastic as many OLED displays. With FHD +, however, the display is sharp enough for this, so even longer texts are fun. Basically, it is an inconspicuous display because it does not offer any clear strengths, but it also does not have any major weaknesses. The correct description would be according to the price.

Snapdragon processor: invisible highlight

The battery benefits from the large display, because there is plenty of space and this has been used. Because the combination with the Snapdragon 720G is really strong for this price range, the Redmi Note 9S meets high demands in terms of battery life. Three days without an outlet were even possible for me, mainly in the wifi and mostly with “simple” apps like Gmail, Twitter, YouTube. As already indicated, the processor is really fast. An advantage over other devices like the Oppo A91.

As usual, I played a few games, including Asphalt 9, PUBG and Call of Duty. If these games run smoothly, that’s proof enough. Incidentally, was the case. With simple apps, the good performance is confirmed, which pleases and was previously unthinkable in this price range. For long-term fun, the low surcharge should be worth it to get the model with 6 GB RAM / 128 GB storage.

Back to the battery again, because it really shocked me positively: after 3 hours of screen time and 6 hours of operation, of which Asphalt 9 was active for 2.5 hours, I still had 75 percent battery left. Hammer.

The Redmi Note 9S also has the latest WiFi and Bluetooth on board, and there are no negative features. Redmi Note 9S customers benefit from the Snapdragon platform in this regard. When downloading from the Play Store, the Xiaomi cell phone has easily exhausted the full performance of my Internet with 120 Mbit / s.

Xiaomi: Own Android software with integrated advertising

To be able to offer low prices, Xiaomi also monetizes its own devices with integrated advertising. However, I only noticed one single banner that is displayed when scanning new apps. But you can turn it off – advertising and virus scanning of apps. Otherwise there are no abnormalities with the MIUI 11. If you come from another manufacturer, it may take some getting used to. But nothing more. Android is Android and the basic structure is mostly the same.

Xiaomi also provides this price range with many practical functions, such as the app clone for double WhatsApp use, additional app lock, an extensive design function, one-handed mode and much more. If you don’t need it, just ignore it. The system is obviously not slowed down by MIUI, even with updates Xiaomi has always cut a fine figure in recent years. The manufacturer maintains the MIUI in an exemplary manner. In the first two weeks, several system updates came in here.

Conclusion: price performance hit from only 200 euros

There is no perfect phone for the general public. Logical. If you have high demands on a camera, the price level in which you have to search is higher. 48 MP or not, that has nothing to say. If you just take a snapshot on the side, instead attach more importance to brisk system performance and do not want to constantly search for sockets, the Redmi Note 9S is definitely the right candidate. But for long-term enjoyment, I definitely recommend the large version, the low surcharge is worth it.

  • Top performance for gaming too
  • Hardly any comparable battery life
  • Very good fingerprint sensor in the power button
  • Ultra wide-angle camera available
  • 6 GB RAM to choose from
  • Neatly processed
  • Modern radio standards
  • Jack and infrared available

Redmi Note 9S test

  • Camera only suitable for snapshots
  • The display takes some getting used to
  • Housing smeared and magically attracts fingerprints
  • Mono sound is not a pleasure
  • Volume keys that are difficult to reach because they are placed too high
