The French Prime Minister, Jean Castex, obtained on Tuesday the massive endorsement of the National Assembly to the maintenance in June of the poll aimed at renewing the elected departmental and regional. But these will be postponed to June 20 and 27.

(AFP) – The French regional and departmental elections will take place. But if they were initially to be held on Sundays the 13th and 20th, they will be held on the 20th and 27th of the same month, with reinforced protocols in the face of the covid-19 epidemic. Jean Castex obtained the massive endorsement of the Assembly on Tuesday, after a controversy over a direct and in extremis consultation of mayors.

“The weeks that separate us from the poll will not be too many. To give us time, we are going to postpone the election dates by an additional week, ”said the French Prime Minister during the debate on whether to maintain the two ballots in the National Assembly, before the Senate on Wednesday.

“Of course, it is only one week, but an additional week of campaign, one week of vaccination more, that is to say at least 2 million people vaccinated, one week of preparation more, that counts!”, Has t he added, specifying that a decree would be presented next week in the Council of Ministers.

In an advisory vote, the deputies largely approved this slight shift by 443 votes against 73 and one abstention, a number of MoDem elected officials – yet allies of the majority – being opposed to it. The LFI deputies, for their part, refused to take part.

Among the measures announced to guarantee the security of the polls, the government will propose to vaccinate the members of the polling stations who so wish. Candidates and their campaign teams will also be able to travel beyond the 10 km perimeter currently imposed.

The use of proxy voting “will again be facilitated”, explained Castex, recalling that each voter will “have the possibility of having two proxies”. A website will be created in order to allow voters to have “all the professions of faith of the candidates for the two elections”, during a campaign which will be “different”.

Castex also proposes to set up “a permanent monitoring committee”, which will be chaired by a “Mr. Elections”: Jean-Denis Combrexelle, former president of the litigation section of the Council of State.
