Rumor: Amazon is working on extended reality glasses

Amazon is reportedly planning a headset that combines virtual and augmented reality in one device.

Various job postings in recent months indicate that Amazon is working on a headset that will combine virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in one device. According to the tenders, Amazon is looking for senior positions for designers, program managers, technologists and researchers, among others. The large number of positions suggests that Amazon wants to build a large team.

XR concept as a consumer product

The tender states, among other things:

“They will develop an advanced XR research concept into a magical and useful novel consumer product.”

The possibilities of VR and AR are summarized under the generic term of Extended Reality (XR). Developers should program code for early prototypes through to mass production. Amazon has yet to issue an official statement on its plans.

Amazon hasn’t had its own AR or VR glasses yet

In the area of VR and AR headsets, Amazon is currently behind. While Google, Meta, Microsoft and Snap have already launched different products, Amazon only offers the smart glasses Echo Frames. In the past, there were patent applications for video glasses at Amazon, but no indication of whether the project was pursued further.
